The
Rabbi Arthur J. Lelyveld Collection at Grasselli Library Gorman Duffett, Director of Grasselli Library, opened the program, noting that in presenting the Lelyveld collection, "we hope to preserve the thoughts of this great man." Noting that her husband was a man "completely without guile," Teela Lelyveld added, "I know he would be proud and pleased today." Recalling his amazement that a person of Rabbi Lelyveld's international stature would readily agree to be part-time instructor at JCU, Religious Studies Professor Joseph Kelly said, "This was the first but not the last time that Arthur's good-heartedness would surprise me." When the rabbi fell ill, Kelly took over a class for him and immediately was struck by the high level of participation he had inspired in his students. "For the rest of the semester I had a fine time," Kelly said, "reaping what Arthur had sowed." The program also included a recording of Rabbi Lelyveld's own words when he said, "The library is the heart of our enterprise ... the 'Holy of Holies.' It was fitting that one kept silent there, not only to avoid disturbing others, but because "you do not raise your voice in a sanctuary." Return to top of page |
