Dr. Kwang-Soo Cho, Professor of International Relations at Youngsan University in Korea and a participant in the International Visitor Program sponsored by the U.S. State Department, brought the Far East view of globalization to Carroll today. Speaking to James Wiley's political science class on globalization with the aid of interpreter Jon Whong (at left in class picture), and earlier to a luncheon group of JCU professors, Dr. Cho noted that Korea essentially had globalization imposed on it in 1997 when it had to accept a bailout from the International Monetary Fund. He said the IMF's interest rates and resulting economic conditions impoverished 20 percent of the Koreans who had considered themselves "middle class." A specialist on China, Dr. Cho was invited by JCU's Center for Global Education and hosted by Dr. Paul Nietupski. |
