Don Shula '51 heads a day of pride ... hope ... & peace |

| Don and Mary Anne Shula, ( at right with Athletic Director Tony DeCarlo and JCU President Father Ed Glynn SJ) unveiled the construction sign yesterday for a new stadium -- Don Shula Stadium -- at Wasmer Field. Construction is scheduled to start later this month, with completion targeted for Fall 2002. The Shulas also presented the Loret Miller Ruppe Ambassador for Peace Award sponsored by the Mary Anne Foundation to Robby Arnold of Painesville (lower left). In addition (lower right), Joe Polce '57 and his wife Ermina presented Father Glynn with a $50,000 check for immediate scholarship support. They have established a $3 million charitable remainder trust to endow a scholarship for students bound for John Carroll from Boys Hope Girls Hope. Shula sits on the organization's national board. He was attending his 50th class reunion over the weekend at Carroll. | ![]() |

The Painesville Riverside high school student, who attended St. Mary's School as did Shula and was also an aspiring football player, was hit by a drunk driver and paralyzed from the neck down. He forgave the driver and has dedicated himself to the pursuit of peace and forgiveness. Mary Anne is an active board member of the Mary Anne Foundation, which is named for the mother and grandmother of the "Prince of Peace." |
