Anyone within a mile of Saint Francis Chapel Friday evening (Apr 4) should have been able to hear the soaring performance of the R. Nathaniel Dett Concert Choir in a memorial for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. More than 60 strong, the students from the Cleveland School of the Arts displayed a stunning range not only in vocal ability but in repertoire, with selections from the "Requiem" of Berlioz to the "Chichester Psalms" of Bernstein to such spirituals as "Changed My Name," "I'm Goin' Through" and "Steal Away." JCU Pastor in Residence Valentino Lassiter (in center of top left picture) introduced the performance, which his office sponsored also as part of the 2003 DuBois Souls of Black Folk Celebration. |
