'Homeboy Priest' keynotes Ignatian Day

Members of the faculty, staff and administration -- along with a number of student leaders -- held the annual Ignatian Day workshop at which the JCU community focuses on what it means to be a Jesuit university. This year's theme, "The Pursuit of Justice," was keynoted by "the Homeboy Priest," Greg Boyle SJ (at left), whose Homeboy Industries has been operating successfully in the middle of the highest concentration of youth gangs in America, East Los Angeles.

Mirroring Father Boyle's message in Carroll-specific terms was Jennifer Merritt (at lower left) of Education and Allied Studies. Dr. Merritt directs the Carroll-Cleveland Philosophers Program, providing an "Option School" curriculum for about 15 low socioeconomic status (SES) and court adjudicated children ages 12-17. Moderator of the program was Howard Gray SJ, Assistant to the President for University Mission.
