JCU celebrates feast of St. Ignatius

Richard Salmi SJ celebrates Mass in Saint Francis Chapel Greg Konz SJ greets Art Noetzel and other members of the JCU community
Members of the university community celebrated Mass with Father Richard Salmi and his fellow Jesuits (including Father Greg Konz, greeting Art Noetzel and others at right) and then enjoyed a picnic on the Quad. The occasion yesterday (July 31) was the Feast of St. Ignatius, founder of the Society of Jesus and inspiration for the Jesuit tradition of higher education at JCU. In his homily Fr. Salmi, who leaves Carroll soon as Vice President for Student Life for a similar post at Loyola of Chicago, noted the admonition of Jesus that we must give of ourselves if we are to save ourselves. "In our giving of ourselves we have all been blessed with co-workers and students who have touched our lives," Fr. Salmi said. "They are the ones who go out from this place marked by the mission of our university ... to develop women and men with the knowledge and character to lead and to serve." As a leading example of this, he quoted Min (Melinda) Madasz, a 2001 graduate who wrote to him shortly after arriving for volunteer service in the Phillipines, saying that she would value "sustenance over abundance ... existence over accomplishment ... being over doing."
