Dr. Juan Andrade, head of US Hispanic Leadership Institute, speaks at JCU

Dr. Juan Andrade and Yvonne QuinonesJuan Andrade, who heads the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) and is one of only two Latinos to receive the Presidential Medal for "the performance of exemplary deeds to the nation," offered suggestions yesterday on how students can empower themselves to make a difference in the lives of others. "We are not here for ourselves, we are here for others," he said, attributing his own success to God. "My job is to help other people succeed." He spoke on the eve of the 20th annual USHLI conference that is expected to attract over 8,000 participants representing hundreds of cities in nearly 40 states and approximately 1,000 entities, more than any other Hispanic conference in the nation. Earlier Dr. Andrade met with Yvonne Quinones, President of the Latin American Students Association, who leaves for the conference in Chicago tomorrow with eight other JCU students and two administrators. The lecture was sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
