London Fletcher '97 Dave Bacon '88
NFL Middle Linebacker London Fletcher '97, en route from the St. Louis Rams to the Buffalo Bills, visited JCU recently to record a video greeting for the Ohio Athletic Conference's centennial celebration. The OAC is older than the NCAA and all but two its member conferences -- the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (1888) and the Big Ten (1895). John Carroll became a full-time member of the OAC in 1989. Fletcher also sat for an interview with Classic Teleproductions Producer Dave Bacon '88.

  London Fletcher ...

On the value of JCU's athletic program:

"Well, having a successful athletic program, it gives the students identity, it gives them something to rally around, to want to be a part of, to go to games to cheer for your university and when you're winning it makes it all the better because you may have friends that go to rival colleges ... And the alumni, they hang their hats on having a successful athletic program. they like to pick up the paper and see their team is winning in football, basketball, baseball, hockey, whatever the case may be, so when you have a program that's a success, high school students want to come here, whether you're an athlete or not, just to be a part of something that's considered a winner."

On the University's continued advancement:

"I think with the times the way they are you have to become better. You can't stay the same whether it's the academic realm or the athletic realm. To compete with the other universities you have to have the new modern facilities. And with the new Science Center, it's going to help bring the students here who want to have a science career, a science background. The facility I'm sure is going to be marvelous, and with the new athletic arena, the renovation that they're doing in the Shula Center and also with the new football field, it's going to help in bringing the high school athletes to John Carroll. Maybe some that would have wanted to go to a Mount Union or a Baldwin-Wallace now when they see the type of facility we have at John Carroll will want to play in this arena and also on that footabll field. And with that new stadium, it's probably going to be the best in the OAC, I can't see any other stadium competing with that. As a high school athlete I would definitely want to come to a university that has great athletic facilities."

On his future and JCU's future:

"Hopefully, I'll get to play for many, many more years, and hopefully we'll be able to get more athletes from John Carroll into the professional arena and to be able to broaden the reputation that John Carroll has nationally not only from an academic standpoint but also from an athletic standpoint. The more success I have as a professional athlete the more recognition the university gets, so hopefully I can continue to play and maybe win another Super Bowl and continue to bring recognition to John Carroll University."
