Rev. Joseph Echols Lowery, one of the founding fathers of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), will be the guest of the Office of Multicultural Affairs at John Carroll University on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 at 7 p.m. Rev. Lowery will present a lecture entitled “Looking Back and Continuing the March for Civil Rights.” |

Rev.
Lowery’s beginning as a civil rights leader began in Mobile, Alabama
almost a half-century ago when he led the desegregation of buses and other
public accommodations. Since then he has founded the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference where he served as vice president until 1967 when
he was nominated by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to serve as the first chairman
of the board. Under his leadership, SCLC/WOMEN launched the first educational
program by a major advocacy group about the dangers of HIV/AIDS in the black
community.
In addition to founding SCLC, Rev. Lowery has also led protests against firms doing business with South Africa and was arrested for doing so. He is one of the founders of the Black Leadership Forum and is presently chairman. Presently he is also a consultant to the Black Promoters Association which seeks to eliminate discriminatory policies by talent agencies. Rev. Lowery has studied at Alabama A&M, Knoxville
College, Payne College and Seminary, Wayne University and Chicago Ecumenical
