Marian Wright Edelman, founder and CEO of the Children’s Defense Fund, will be the guest of the Office of Multicultural Affairs on Monday, March 13, 2006 at 7 p.m. Edelman will present a lecture entitled “Stand Up for Children Now.” |
WHO:

Edelman
is a graduate of Spelman College and Yale Law School and the first black
woman admitted to the Mississippi Bar. Throughout her professional career
she has been advocating for disadvantaged Americans. She is the founder
and president of the NAACP Children's Defense Fund and has acted as counsel
for the Poor People’s Campaign in Washington, D.C.
During this time Mrs. Edelman also began to focus more on issues relating to child development and children in poverty. Specifically she has advocated for pregnancy prevention, prenatal care, health care funding, parental responsibility for education, and child care funding. In addition to the Children’s Defense Fund, she
has served as director of the Center for Law and Education at Harvard
University. As a result of her lifetime commitment to help disadvantaged
Americans, Edelman received the nation’s highest civilian award,
the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2000. |
