Presents
“Sharing the Riches: Spirituality in an Age of Science”
The Walter & Mary Tuohy Chair of Interreligious Studies Welcomes Father Joseph Bracken
This event is free and open to the public
WHAT:
Throughout March and April, Father Joseph Bracken SJ, a professor of theology at Xavier University in Cincinnati, will be the guest of the Walter and Mary Tuohy Chair of Interreligious Studies. Bracken will present a lecture series entitled, “Sharing the Riches: Spirituality in an Age of Science.” In this series, Bracken will address the sometimes conflicting views of traditional Christian doctrines and the modern scientific world.
WHO:
Bracken is a leading Catholic philosophical theologian and the foremost exponent of process theology in the world today. Since 1982, he has taught at Xavier University and has served as the first occupant of the Beckman Family Chair and director of the Brueggeman Center for Interreligious Dialogue. He has lectured widely, published over 70 journals, and written seven books including The One in the Many: A Contemporary Reconstruction of the God-World Relationship. His eighth book, due to be published in the spring, is entitled Christianity and Process Thought: Spiritually for a Changing World. Bracken is also currently a visiting professor at John Carroll University.
WHEN:

Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m.

TUESDAY, MARCH 14, 2006 – “Making Space for God in Our World”
Father Bracken explains how we human beings and all other creatures come forth from God and unconsciously live in the “space” of the divine field of activity all our earthly lives.

TUESDAY, MARCH 21, 2006 – “Good and Evil as Cosmic Realities”
The three divine persons continually prompt us to make the right decisions during our earthly lives, but in the end we are free to make our own decisions for better or worse.

TUESDAY, MARCH 28, 2006 - “Truth in an Ever-Changing World”
The Church is for Christians, the most effective way to contribute to the growth of the collective power of good in this world.

TUESDAY, APRIL 4, 2006 – “Divine Providence and the Efficacy of Prayer”
How is one to reconcile human freedom and divine providence? Are the divine persons limited in their providence for us by our finite decisions?

TUESDAY, APRIL 11, 2006 – “How Will It All End?”
Modern science predicts that our universe will inevitably come to an end in either a “big crunch” or a “deep freeze.”

TUESDAY, APRIL 18, 2006 – “Trusting God and Trusting Self”
In this concluding lecture, Bracken initially responds to claims of scientists like Edward O. Wilson and Richard Dawkins that persistent unselfishness puts oneself and one’s family at risk for survival in a world strictly governed by natural selection.
