John Carroll University Announces
the Creation of 30 Full-Tuition Scholarships for Students in
Cleveland Public Schools and Cuyahoga County Catholic High Schools

Cleveland, OH –Rev. Robert L. Niehoff, S.J., president of John Carroll University, today announced a new university scholarship program that will reach out into the community and change the lives of a select group of up to 30 students who are currently high school seniors in either the Cleveland Public School System or attending a Catholic high school in Cuyahoga County. Named the “Cleveland Opportunity Scholarship,” the awards will be presented to academically excellent students who may also have significant financial need.

High achievers attending one of the target Cleveland public schools, or Catholic high schools in Cuyahoga County are eligible. In addition to academic achievement and financial need as selection criteria, students must possess the will to succeed, leadership skills, and have strong community involvement. These 30 full-tuition scholarships are available to eligible students applying for enrollment at John Carroll for the 2006-2007 academic year. Each scholarship will cover the tuition cost at John Carroll, which presently is $24,782.

"Support for exceptional students, particularly those with financial need and a great drive to succeed, can have profoundly positive effects on society,” said Father Niehoff. “These students have overcome tremendous obstacles, and we are proud to help them continue their education and further prepare to make valuable contributions to our world. Scholarship recipients who enroll will bring their backgrounds and talents to our campus and enhance the quality of the educational experience for other John Carroll students. In instituting these scholarships, John Carroll also hopes to further extend its commitment to the Greater Cleveland community by playing a part in keeping talented students from the area, in the area,” stated Niehoff.

The dollar amount of the actual scholarship (COS) will be amended to allow the inclusion of federal, state or other aid that must be “tuition specific.” The dollar amount, after the actual financial aid award is produced, will equal the full tuition cost. That amount will increase to meet any tuition increases.

When a student files a FAFSA (free application for federal student aid) form and demonstrates need that exceeds the tuition amount, funds able to be used for “educational expense” may be added to contribute to room and board charges. After a student’s freshman year, the full-tuition scholarship will be renewed for an additional three years (six semesters) if the student continues as a full-time student, making adequate progress towards a degree. A student must also meet the academic merit renewal requirements at John Carroll. Additionally, students who are recipients of the Cleveland Opportunity Scholarship will be required to live on campus, so that they will have an opportunity to fully engage in the campus community. The value and duration of each scholarship may vary based on the cost of attendance or other grants individual students receive.

There is no separate application for the Cleveland Opportunity Scholarship. A student must apply for admission to John Carroll and must be enrolled, this year, by May 1, 2006. While the official application deadline has passed, the Office of Admission will consider applications from eligible students until all scholarship offers are placed.
A student must be ranked in the top five of his or her high school class at the end of their junior year. Exceptions to the rule may be made if a student joins the top five after the first grading period in senior year, if scholarships remain.

Eligible students at the following schools will be considered: Beaumont School, Benedictine High School, Cleveland Central Catholic High School, Cleveland School of the Arts, Collinwood High School, East Tech High School, Glenville High School, Health Careers High School, Holy Name High School, James Rhodes High School, Jane Addams High School, John F. Kennedy High School, John Marshall High School, Gilmour Academy, Lincoln- West High School, Magnificat High School, Martin Luther King Jr. High School, Max S.
