WHAT:

Dr.
Francesco Cesareo, Dean of the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal
Arts at Duquesne University and founding director of the Institute of Catholic
Studies at John Carroll University, will speak on the John Carroll campus
on Thursday, April 6, 2006 at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Cesareo will be the guest of
The Bishop Anthony M. Pilla Program in Italian American Studies. He will
present a lecture entitled “Turning Bishops into Pastors: The Italian
Episcopacy in the 16th Century.”
Dr. Cesareo’s numerous areas of expertise include Catholic reform thought in 16th Century Italy with a focus on Renaissance education, Church history, Catholic higher education and the papacy. In his lecture, Dr. Cesaro will explore the challenges the Church faced in transforming the episcopacy and what can be learned from the Italian experience for the contemporary Church. |

Dr.
Cesareo began his tenure at Duquesne University in August of 2004. Prior
to becoming dean, he was Director of the Institute of Catholic Studies at
John Carroll University, a position that began in 1997. Dr. Cesareo came
to John Carroll in 1989, as a member of the university’s history department.
In addition to being a dedicated teacher and an accomplished scholar of the Catholic intellectual tradition, Dr. Cesareo has served on many boards and received numerous fellowships. He is the author of two books, including his most recent book, A Shepherd in Their Midst: The Episcopacy of Girolamo Seripando: 1554-1563, and of numerous articles and book reviews. He has also served as a Fulbright Scholar at both the University of Rome and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Italy, and completed a year-long Faculty Fellowship for Academic Leadership at the Mandel Foundation. Additionally,
Dr. Cesareo has served as the managing editor of Archivum Historicum Societatis
Iesu, a semi-annual journal published by the Institute of Catholic Studies
at John Carroll University and completed administrative development programs
at Harvard University and Boston College. |
