of Stephen King’s Cell” |

WHAT:
|
Stephen
King, the master of horror, is at it again. His latest novel, Cell, in which
wireless technology turns ordinary mobile phone users into swarms of zombies,
currently resides atop the fiction bestseller lists. Dr. Dan Palmer, professor of mathematics and computer science and co-director of the John Carroll University Swarm Laboratory, will discuss “Just how much of this is fiction?” on Wednesday, May 3, at a lecture entitled “The Science and Technology of Stephen King’s Cell.” Dr. Palmer, a Stephen King fan, will not advocate getting rid of your cell phone during his presentation, but rather will talk about whether King accurately depicts the human swarms. Palmer and his undergraduate
students conduct research into swarms, including many “Human Swarm
Events” both at the Dolan Center for Science and Technology on the
John Carroll campus and at scientific conferences around the country.
Palmer’s discussion will be a fun, fact-filled talk about the intersection
of King’s brand of horror and real science. Afterwards, all interested
audience members will have the opportunity to participate in a human swarm.
Dr. Palmer won’t be turning anyone into cell phone zombies, but
he will be demonstrating the same concepts that ants, bees, flocking birds,
and schooling fish use every day for their survival, migration and feeding.
Bring questions about King’s work and bring your curiosity! After
all, how do wasps build nests thousands of times larger than themselves
without a leader, without blueprints, and without a plan? |
