John Carroll University’s
Assistant to the President Appointed
Director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs


CLEVELAND, OH – Dr. David La Guardia, academic vice president of John Carroll University, has announced the appointment of Janetta M. Hammock to the position of director of John Carroll’s Office of Multicultural Affairs. Hammock currently serves as assistant to the president and secretary to the board at the university. She assumes her new position on July 3, 2006.

“I am grateful to Ms. Hammock for her willingness to take on the significant challenges of the very important Office of Multicultural Affairs,” Dr. La Guardia said in announcing the appointment.

Hammock holds a Master of Arts degree in African-American Studies from Morgan State University (MD) and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from Michigan State University. She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree at Case Western Reserve University.

Prior to coming to John Carroll four years ago, Hammock served in the Division of Government and Public Affairs at the American Council on Education (ACE) in Washington, DC. At ACE, she served as the organization’s resource person on issues
related to diversity and affirmative action, college and university administration, and college cost.

In her position as director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs, Hammock will work closely with university leaders to develop strategies and programs aimed at improving and promoting diversity and building an inclusive campus community.

John Carroll University, located in Cleveland, Ohio, is a liberal arts university grounded in the Jesuit, Catholic tradition. The university has some 3,350 plus undergraduates and just over 750 graduate students. The U.S. News & World Report’s 2006 annual college guide ranks John Carroll University among the top 10 master’s-degree granting universities in the Midwest and first in average graduation rate. Originally founded as
St. Ignatius College in 1886, the university was renamed in 1923 to honor America’s first Catholic bishop, John Carroll of Maryland. John Carroll is one of 28 Jesuit colleges and universities located in the United States.
