Carroll University Appoints J. Gerard Sheehan as CLEVELAND, OH – Rev. Robert L. Niehoff, SJ, president of John Carroll University, has appointed J. Gerard Sheehan to a new post of associate vice president of government and community relations. Sheehan, who most recently served as director of public affairs, first joined the university in 1989 as director of public policy. In his new role, Sheehan will be responsible for coordinating the university’s response to legislative and policy issues at the federal and state levels, obtaining government funds to support institutional priorities, and coordinating the university’s relationships with local public officials and community leaders. “During my first year as president, I recognized the need for a full-time, dedicated individual to manage our relationships with government, community leaders and our neighbors—from campus to the University Heights City Hall to Capitol Hill. Jerry Sheehan is uniquely suited for this important new position,” said Father Niehoff. Prior to John Carroll, Sheehan served as vice president for area development at AmeriTrust and as vice president for economic development at the Greater Cleveland Growth Association. Previous experience included economic development positions with the U.S. Economic Development Administration and the City of Cleveland. He also served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Republic of the Philippines. Sheehan received a bachelor of arts degree from the College of the Holy Cross and an MBA from Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management. John Carroll University,
located in Cleveland, Ohio, is a liberal arts university grounded in the
Jesuit, Catholic tradition. The university has some 3,350 plus undergraduates
and just over 750 graduate students. The U.S. News & World Report’s
2006 annual college guide ranks John Carroll University among the top
10 master’s-degree granting universities in the Midwest and first
in average graduation rate. Originally founded as St. Ignatius College
in 1886, the university was renamed in 1923 to honor America’s first
Catholic bishop, John Carroll of Maryland. John Carroll is one of 28 Jesuit
colleges and universities located in the United States. ###
