The Dr. Shirley S. Seaton Cultural Awareness Series at John Carroll University hosts nationally recognized political leader, Ada Deer, who will discuss the state of today’s American Indian communities and highlight issues of concern. |
WHO:
|
Recognized as a life-long advocate for and champion of Indian rights, Deer was the first American Indian woman to head the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs. She effectively led the campaign to restore federal recognition of the Menominee Tribe and was the first woman to serve as chair of the tribe. Currently Deer serves as director of the American Indian Studies Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which provides leadership to other university departments and programs in the pursuit of American Indian course development and scholarship. |
