WHAT:
|
The
Poverty and Solidarity Program at John Carroll University will host a lecture
entitled “Photographing the Poor and Powerless: Some Ethical Considerations”
and “The Faces of Homelessness.” The program recognizes that
addressing the complex and systemic nature of domestic and global poverty
requires well-educated citizens and professionals with significant understanding
of poverty and hopes to educate students about their social responsibility
to use their skills and influence as friends and allies of the poor.
The discussion complements Steve Cagan’s powerful
photographic documentary exhibition entitled “The Homeless Look
Like People to Me.” |
WHO:
|
The
lecture is divided into two parts and hosted by the following participants
respectively:
Part 1: Photographing the Poor and Powerless: Some Ethical Considerations: Steve Cagan, award-winning photographer and social activist. Cagan’s documentaries include examining the effects of plant closings in Ohio communities, revolutionary action in Nicaragua and El Salvador and the living situations of several working-class families in Cuba. Cagan has taught at numerous institutions including Rutgers University and has been awarded fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ohio Arts Council and the New Jersey Council on the Arts. Part 2: The Faces of Homelessness: Brian Davis, executive director of Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless (NEOCH) and Vonzella Johnson, NEOCH member. Davis is responsible for maintaining the mission of the coalition to end homelessness and empowering homeless men, women and children to reduce poverty. He also coordinates all advocacy, development, fundraising and public relations programs. Davis is a graduate of Case Western Reserve University in political science and history and has been with NEOCH since 1995. Johnson is a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother,
a student at Cleveland State University and a survivor of domestic violence.
She is also living with HIV and mental illness. She volunteers with the
AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland and the Rape Crisis Center and lives
for helping others.
