John Carroll University Presents:
Joan E. Southgate
The author and activist walked the 519-mile Ohio Underground Railroad Route

Saturday, March 3, 2007
9 a.m.

WHAT:
Author, community activist and grandmother, Joan E. Southgate, will share stories of her 519-mile walk along the Underground Railroad route from Ripley, Ohio, to St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada. She will discuss the importance of sharing family heritage through oral and written accounts.

“In Their Path: A Writer Shares Her Journey Along Ohio’s Underground Railroad” is being presented as part of a special literacy event for parents and children, grades pre-K-8, by the Institute for Educational Renewal (IER), which is affiliated with John Carroll University. IER is a professional development organization working in local school districts and currently coordinating the activities of the Cleveland Municipal School District’s Children’s Book Fund and providing on-site support in Euclid and Warrensville Heights.

Following Southgate’s presentation, children and their parents will have the opportunity to develop and share their own “stories” during a writing workshop activity.

This event is free, with limited seating.
