Father Emmanuel Carreira
“What Is The Universe That We Can't See?”

This event is free and open to the public

What:  Father Emmanuel Carreira, SJ, a Spanish-born physicist, theologian, philosopher, astronomer, inventor and photographer, whose photographs have graced exhibits on several continents, will return to John Carroll University for a special series of lectures during the month of April.  Carreira will speak on April 7 and 13 at 8:00 p.m. in the Dolan Center for Science and Technology

April 7   In his first lecture, “The New Age of Space Exploration, Carreira will examine possible habitats for life in our Solar System.  He will look at worlds with liquid water, now and in the past, and explore the possible scenarios of Mars as a wet planet.  In his quest for answers, Carreira will pose the questions, did oceans and rivers last long enough for life to develop and can Mars be habitable in the future?

During the evening Father Carreira will also discuss the hidden oceans of Europa and consider what happened under miles of ice that are millions of years old.

April 13  Carreira’s second lecture is entitled, “The More We Know, The Less We Understand: What Is The Universe That We Can't See?”  During this evening’s astronomical discussions, Carreira ponders dark matter and dark energy, and accordingly, tells us we are in the dark about them.  Our scientific guide will then explore possible new ways to explain “things,” for example, the changing speed of light, a different second Law of Newtonian Mechanics, and an infinite speed for gravity.  Finally, Carreira will address one of the newest and most thought provoking recent scientific discoveries by examining evidence that shows the universe is speeding up after ages of slowing down

Where/When Both lectures will take place at 8:00 p.m., April 7 & April 13, 2004, Conference Room 202-203, Dolan Center for Science and Technology
