Wins 10 National and Regional Awards
Setting a Record in the Paper’s 80-Year History
John Carroll’s
student newspaper, The Carroll News, set an award-winning record this
year, by earning 10 national and regional awards and setting an achievement
record in the paper’s 80-year history. Recognition comes from the Society for
Collegiate Journalists (SCJ) and the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ)
for the 2004-2005 academic year. SCJ is a national society of collegiate mass
communications and the nation's oldest organization designed solely to serve
college journalists. SCJ has approximately 1,200 members and 100 active chapters
nationwide. The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) is dedicated to the
perpetuation of a free press as the cornerstone of our nation and our liberty.
“It’s wonderful that these national organizations have honored our hard-working,
dedicated student journalists for the high quality product they have provided
the JCU community this school year. I'm very proud of our staff of reporters and
editors this year,” said Robert Noll, an instructor in the Department of
Communications at John Carroll University and the advisor to The
Carroll News.
The John Carroll University Carroll News awards from the Society for
Collegiate Journalists include: “Newspapers,” Overall Excellence, First Place,
Beth Stallings, editor-in-chief; “Editorials,” Third Place, “Our Game Plan”;
“Features,” Second Place, “Battling Terror,” Beth Stallings; “Sports News,”
First Place, “McConville, Ferdanez Shine,” Kevin Yanik; “Honorable Mention,”
“Fantastic at the Final Four,” Kevin Yanik; “Spot News,” Third Place, Greg
Hoener; “Honorable Mention,” News Story, Lisa Schwan.
At the Society of Professional Journalists’ Region 4 Conference, the Carroll
News Staff was honored with a Second Place, “Mark of Excellence Award” as the
“Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper” and Third Place in “Sports
Photography” for Kevin Yanik.
Additional honors were given to The Carroll News staff by The Columbia
Scholastic Press Association, which honored Angela Yingling with a Certificate
of Merit for her personal opinion column. The Jim Murray Sports Journalism
Workshop honored Kevin Yanik as one of only 25 student journalists selected from
across the country by the The Los Angeles Times to attend the Jim Murray
Sports Journalism Workshop at the LA Times. Finally, the National
College Editors Seminar for the third consecutive year, selected a Carroll
News Editor-in-Chief to attend the Management Seminar for College Newspaper
Editors at the University of Georgia. This year’s JCU attendee will be Tricia
Graham.
