Peter Anagnostos succeeds Paul Kantz as
JCU's Vice President for Development

Peter_a.jpg (36237 bytes) John Carroll University’s president, Reverend Edward Glynn, SJ, has selected Peter K. Anagnostos to head the development division for the Jesuit, liberal arts institution effective July 1.

He will succeed Paul Kantz, who is retiring from the university after 30 years of service. Anagnostos has been director of development for science and technology at JCU since 1997.

“I am delighted that Peter has accepted this appointment as vice president for development," Father Glynn said.  " John Carroll University has a history of great success in raising funds in support of our educational activities, facilities and scholarships. Peter's profound convictions about and deep understanding of the mission of John Carroll, joined with his broad experience and highly successful leadership in so many areas of fund raising in so many institutions, will enable him not only to sustain but also to advance John Carroll's achievements of excellence in raising funds in support of the university's mission.”

Anagnostos received his bachelor’s degree in political philosophy and art history from Assumption College and his master’s degree in comparative religion from Harvard University. Since joining John Carroll, he has been responsible for preparing grants for university projects, including a major campaign to renovate the university’s science center through solicitations to public and private foundations, corporations and individuals.

Anagnostos began his career as an assistant editor of the Hellenic Chronicle Newspaper. There, he was responsible for writing and editing all news and features for the weekly, 22-page newspaper with a national readership of 325,000.

At his next assignment, Anagnostos launched into fundraising when he became a development officer for Harvard Divinity School. He then was hired by Harvard Medical School to establish its first donor relations program as part of a $185-million endowment campaign. Fifteen months later, after successfully establishing the program and generating $2 million in gifts, he was promoted to regional campaign coordinator and, later, to associate director of major gifts and director of major gifts.

Anagnosotos left Harvard in 1991, at which time he joined University Hospitals of Cleveland as director of major gifts and planned giving. Anagnostos’ next assignment was with The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, where he was vice chairman of institutional advancement.

The post Anagnostos held just prior to joining JCU’s development team was with the American Red Cross, Greater Cleveland, where he was hired as director of financial development. There, he directed all aspects of a $5-million annual fundraising program for the Greater Cleveland Chapter and led fundraising efforts throughout Ohio to establish a fund that will protect the state in the event of a large-scale state or national disaster. He raised in excess of $20 million over three years in this position and more than tripled operating income from direct mail in his first year (maintaining that pace of steady increases in successive years). He was presented the American Red Cross Fundraiser of the Year Award in 1996.

His community activities include serving on the boards of directors of the Federation for Community Planning, Shaker Family Center and Fresh Start Cleveland. He is also a member of the Panel on Curriculum of SMART (Science and Math Required for Tomorrow). Anagnostos and his wife, Jane (Johnson), are the parents of two daughters - Emily (5) and Kate (3) - and live in Shaker Heights.
