JCU RELAY HISTORY

The first American Cancer Society Relay For Life of John Carroll University took place in April 2007. After several years of setbacks in trying to organize the first event, then seniors Joel Mullner and Patrick Kelly persevered to finally gain the necessary approval after making several adjustments and compromises to their proposal. Under enormous time constraints, a lot of peer and administrative pressure, and a severe lack of Relay experience on the part of most members of the leadership team, the first annual event went off near perfectly, surpassing almost all of the team's, and American Cancer Society's goals. That year, in the Carroll News year-end special, the CN staff forecasted that the Relay will be a "staple" for years to come. They also praised Mullner and Kelly for "starting the biggest campus tradition." That year's event turned out to be the top collegiate Relay For Life in the United States.
