"Captain America and the Crusade Against Evil"

"Captain America and the Crusade Against Evil" deals with the background of the crusading mentality that has guided American policies since 9/11/2001. The two sides of the American "messiah" tradition are explained, with reference to their origins in earlier American adaptations of biblical themes and their embodiment in the superheroic stories of pop culture. The lecture calls for a critical evaluation of the crusading tradition and a reaffirmation of the American constitutional tradition.

Outstanding Graduating Senior Award - 2007

The Department of Religious Studies announced the 2007 Outstanding Graduating Senior was awarded to Brian Bremer and Linda Kawentel.

Faculty Member Wins ASIANetwork Fellowship

The Department of Religious Studies is pleased to announce that Dr. Paul K. Nietupski, associate professor of religious studies, has been awarded the ASIANetwork Freeman Student-Faculty Fellowship for 2006. This is the second time Dr. Nietupski has been honored with this particular fellowship to support the students in their knowledge and experience in East Asian studies.

Five very talented and motivated students were chosen to join him on this research project: Melissa Cigoi, Nick Mercurio, Alecia Ott, Rosemary Stanitz-Skove, and Jeff Villanueva.

To fulfill the requirements of this award, each student that participated in the research project presented a paper at the ASIANetwork Conference in Chicago, Spring 2007. Two of those papers, Melissa Cigoi and Rosemary Stanitz-Skove, are now published in the Wittenberg University East Asian Studies Journal, Spring 2008, Volume XXXIII. <more>

Faculty Member Commissioned by
President Bush's Council on Bioethics

The Department of Religious Studies is pleased to announce that in the spring of 2003 President Bush's Council on Bioethics commissioned Dr. Paul Lauritzen to write a report on the ethical issues related to stem cell research. He completed his report in June and met with the President's Council in July. His report is now available at the Council's website at http://www.bioethics.gov/background/lauritzen_paper.html.

Faculty Member Receives Fulbright Award

A prestigious Fulbright Scholar Award was presented to Dr. Paul Nietupski. He joined 225,000 distinguished scholars and professionals worldwide who are leaders in the education, political, economic, social and cultural lives of their countries.Dr. Nietupski traveled to the People's Republic of China for ten months.  There he engaged in research for a book on intercultural dynamics in the Labrang region of China from the 18th to 20th centuries.
