USERS GUIDE TO SPIN.PLUS
Listed below is detailed information on using the various components of SPIN.PLUS. Additional help is avalable on the SPIN website.
SPIN QUICK SEARCH
You can enter your own keywords when you use Quick Search to locate funding information. The search can be run using All Words, Any Words, or the Exact Phrase that you type in the search box. Funding opportunities in the United States is the default database; programs in other countries can also be selected.Quick Search will look for the keywords in All Fields, or you can select to search for keywords in the following fields: Titles, Program Objectives, or Program Synopsis.The results can be listed in hits of 25, 50, 75, or 100 per page and can be sorted by Program Number, Program Title, Deadline Dates, or Sponsor Name. Click on the SEARCH button to run a Quick Search.
After you run the search, click on the box for each record you want to save. Click on the bright blue program number to see the full record. The search list and the program records can be printed using your browser's print button.
SPIN ADVANCED SEARCH
The Advanced Search form offers an opportunity for a more detailed search. A help file for advanced searching is available at the top of the form. Boolean searching offers the options of AND, OR, and NOT to further refine the search. All fields are considered optional, but at least one field must contain a search term. Select keywords by clicking on the term with the left mouse button. More than one keyword or category can selected within a field by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking.

Database: The default dates searches for programs in the United States. The drop down list offers choices for other countries.
Keywords: Click on the bright blue Keywords to select from a list of SPIN designated terms based on the NIH-NSF-DOE Thesaurus. The Thesaurus is available for downloading from the SPIN website if you wish to keep a copy handy. After you "select" a keyword, be sure to use the RETURN button on the SPIN screen instead of your browser's BACK button.
Applicant Type: You can limit your to search to funding opportunities available to, for example, graduate students, artists, libraries, junior faculty members, or minority individuals. Select from several SPIN supplied categories.
Award Type: The search can be narrowed to certain awards by selecting from SPIN categories such as fellowships, capital construction, SBIR, and grants for equipment or travel.
Geographic Restrictions: To limit the search to sources that will fund in a specific geographic region, such as Ohio and the Mid West, select No Restrictions, U.S. Midwest, and Ohio.
Locations Tenable: This field describes award restrictions by the research locale. For example, a funding opportunity may be available to any U.S. institution of higher education, however, that research must be conducted in France. You may search for opportunities where the research must be done in France by using the Locations Tenable field.
Sponsor Type: If you wish, you may restrict your search to those opportunities provided by federal or state agencies or perhaps an academic or professional society, for example.
Target Groups: Select this field if you wish to search specifically for opportunities available for research involving, for example, migrants, the handicapped, or the elderly.
SPIN Function Keys:
DELETE ITEMS: Allows you to delete a previously selected search term.
RUN SEARCH: Submits the advanced search form to SPIN to run the search based the criteria you selected.
CLEAR SEARCH: Deletes all selected search terms from the form.
LOAD SEARCH: Will automatically fill in search fields from one of your saved search forms.
SAVE SEARCH: If you wish to run an advanced search on a regular basis, you can save the search form instead of creating it each time. You may want to print out your favorite completed advance search form for future reference. It is advisable to set up your GENIUS profile before attempting to save your first search form. NOTE: It is advisable to set up automatic email notification using SMARTS. If you select the email option from a saved search, each subsequent run will include all previously reported searches. SMARTS will only send search records that have been added since the previous search.
Reporting Options: Once you have run your search, you can see the complete information of any record by clicking on the bright blue hyperlinked program number. You can also save selected records to you computer or print them out.
GENIUS PROFILES & SMARTS
You can create your profile by selecting the GENIUS/SMARTS
link on this page. Select "Create New Profile" listed
at the top of the page. Select "John Carroll University"
from the list of institutions. On the "New Profile Registration"
page, your email address must be accurately typed to receive SMARTS
notification. Select your department from the list provided.
If you cannot locate your department, contact Catherine
Anson.
On the "Profile Summary Page," list all categories available to you. Your profile will be validated by the Director of Sponsored Research before you can begin to use the SMARTS service.
In order to receive email about funding opportunities using SMARTS, you must fill in information under General and Keywords. The search may be narrowed down by filling in Applicant Types, Award Types, Geographic Restrictions, and/or Sponsor Types. A printout of your favorite advanced search form will help you to set the search criteria.
