INTRODUCTION TO SPIN.PLUS

SPIN.PLUS is part of Info.Office, a module-based system of research administration software products and services offered by InfoEd International. The three inter-connected areas of SPIN.PLUS are:

(1) SPIN: an expansive database of funding opportunities, which includes international sponsors;

(2) GENIUS: a database of investigator profiles and research interests; and

(3) SMARTS: automatic email notification of user-selected funding opportunities.

Over 800 US colleges and universities currently subscribe to SPIN.Internationally, SPIN is also packaged for the following areas: Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Europe, and Middle East, with Asia (China and Japan) in development. Not all SPIN subscribers contribute to the GENIUS investigator database.

SPIN

The Sponsored Programs Information Network (SPIN) is a fully searchable database of federal and non-federal funding opportunities, including funding for students. Records contain items such as complete sponsor contact information, deadline dates, and program abstracts.Quick Search selects records for user-provided terms in specified fields.Advanced Search uses SPIN-provided terms to search in categories such as type of award, NIH-NSF-DOE keyword, applicant type, geographic region, sponsor, and/or deadline date. On the Advanced Search form, select a SPIN-designated search term for any field title appearing in a bright blue hyperlink that you want to use. Click on the link to select terms. Fields in dark blue type allow for user-created terms. If you wish to run the search criteria on a regular basis, the form may be saved and loaded for future runs.

OTHER SPIN SERVICES

Also available through SPIN are:

  • Federal Register weekly guide
  • Commerce Business Daily
  • US Patent Office Search
  • MEDLINE
  • US Geological Survey
  • AGRICOLA

GENIUS

The Global Expertise Network Industry, University and Scholars (GENIUS) is an international database of scientific and scholarly expertise used by industry and academia to locate collaborators. The database is searchable by all SPIN subscribers by institution, research interest, and/or geographic location. Investigator registration is limited to subscribers of SPIN.PLUS. Once you enter your profile online and the Grants Administrator validates your registration, you can register for the SMARTS notification system.

SMARTS

The SPIN Matching And Researcher Transmittal System (SMARTS) allows investigators registered in GENIUS to enter their research interests using keywords within SPIN to develop a profile of personal research interests. Newly added opportunities will be emailed on a regular basis. The weekly Federal Register and Commerce Business Daily highlights can be emailed as well.

NAVIGATING THROUGH SPIN

InfoEd recommends using the RETURN link on the SPIN screens to travel through the pages, instead of using your browser's BACK button. This method is especially useful when conducting an Advanced Search.

HOW TO ACCESS SPIN.PLUS

SPIN.PLUS can be accessed through the Internet from any computer connected to the JCU network. Searching from off campus is not permissible.
