Are you conducting survey research? Advising students on projects with human interactions? Regardless of the level of risk involved, you or your student may need to file an application with IRB prior to the start of the data collection.
Research projects covered by the Institutional Review Board policy include, but are not limited to, data from interviews, surveys, questionnaires, tests, observations, and program evaluations. The policy applies to all University personnel (faculty, administrators, staff, and students) who conduct human participant research on campus or off, and to anyone conducting applicable research at John Carroll University.
The IRB website contains helpful information such as:
According to federal guidelines, the research protocol must be approved prior to the collection of the data. Data collected without approval are not to be used in public presentations, including publications, theses, grant proposals, and conference presentations. The majority of the research projects conducted at John Carroll falls under one of the federally designated categories for exempt or expedited review and can be quickly processed by the IRB with requests for minor revisions. Incomplete, complex, and high-risk protocols require a longer review time.
John Carroll University is committed to the ethical use of human participants in research projects and abides by the principles as stated in the Belmont Report and the federal guidelines established for the protection of human research participants (see the IRB website for links to the Belmont Report and the federal guidelines at 45 CFR 46).
If you have any questions about whether your project may need IRB review or need assistance with the forms, please contact our IRB office at 216-397-1527 located in the Administration Building in AD250.
