What financial assistance is available?
Army ROTC offers you several opportunities for FULL-TUITION scholarships (currently $119,400 at JCU or other area campuses). As a high school student, you may compete for a 4-year merit scholarship. Once on campus, you may apply for 4-year, 3-year or 2-year awards. For scholarship consideration, applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5, a minimum ACT score of 19 or SAT score of 920, must be medically qualified, must pass height/weight standards, and must pass a physical fitness test (push-ups, sit-ups, 2-mile run). Student participation in athletics, volunteer service, scouting, student government, church activities, academic and service clubs, prior military service, or part-time/full-time employment is also favorably considered.
Scholarships pay FULL college tuition and fees. They also provide a stipend for books of $900 per year, as well as a personal stipend. That stipend is $300/month for freshmen, $350/month for sophomores, $450/month for juniors and $500/month for seniors during the school year. John Carroll University will also waive room and board charges for ROTC scholarship recipients.

Who can participate in Army ROTC?
All college freshman and sophomores may enroll in introductory Army ROTC courses without any obligations. Over 75 students take ROTC classes at JCU each year. These students come from engineering, business, nursing, and most other academic fields.
Many students “crossenroll” from Case Western Reserve University, Ursuline College, Cleveland State University, Notre Dame College of Ohio and Baldwin-Wallace College… some ROTC courses may be offered at these campuses, depending upon the numbers of students registered.

How does Army ROTC fit into college life?
Army ROTC courses fit into most academic programs as electives. No obligation freshman and sophomore “basic” courses introduce leadership fundamentals, first aid, time management skills and Army mission and history. Adventure activities, such as paint ball, rappelling and orienteering are also offered.
The courses and activities require only a few hours of time each week, and they do not conflict with a student’s other academic, athletic, or extracurricular interests. “Advanced” military science training is offered to students who have completed “basic” courses and to students with previous military training on active or reserve duty. Advanced courses in military leadership tactics prepare students for their roles as Army Officers.

What else does the program offer?
Army ROTC students gain practical leadership experience during two field exercises each year. These weekend activities are required for advanced cadets; freshman and sophomore students may also participate if desired. Near the end of their advanced studies, cadets attend a paid summer leadership camp and may apply for paid internships of 3-4 weeks at Army posts stateside and overseas. Nursing internships include 3-4 weeks of paid practical clinical experience in an Army hospital.

How do I enroll?
Students at John Carroll and Cleveland State may enroll in basic military science courses as part of their normal registration process on their campuses. At Ursuline, Notre Dame College, Case Western, and Baldwin-Wallace, students may pick up cross-enrollment forms at their Registrar’s office.
Students entering after their sophomore year may double up on courses or attend a 4-week summer camp at Fort Knox, KY to qualify for advanced ROTC.
Veterans and students serving in the Army Reserve or National Guard may qualify to enter directly into advanced courses.

What’s the obligation?
Introductory “basic” courses let you take a look at officer opportunities without obligation. Once you accept a scholarship or enter “advanced” courses, you make a commitment to serve as an officer on active or reserve duty when you graduate. Upon graduation from college, each ROTC student receives a commission as a Second Lieutenant. The student may serve in the U.S. Army (active duty, full-time) or in the U.S. Army Reserve/National Guard (part-time). For scholarship students, the military service obligation is 8 years, consisting of either:
Active Duty – 4 years active and 4 years reserve/inactive reserve
Reserve Duty – 8 years active reserve duty (1 weekend per month, 2 weeks a year)
Non-scholarship students incur a 3-year active duty obligation and 5 years reserve/inactive reserves, or a reserve duty commitment of 6 years active reserve duty and 2 years inactive status.
