WOLFPACK SPOTLIGHT MAY 2007: CADET DAN WARNER

In life, the way of things is such that those who are younger wait their turn before stepping into roles of importance. In the Wolfpack Battalion, Dan Warner bucks this trend. The freshman Cadet from Buffalo, NY., has quickly adapted to the rigors of college and has risen to the forefront of the battalion of Cadets. Cadet Warner competed on JCU’s elite ranger challenge team this past fall as one of only two freshmen, and is also active in the Pershing Rifles fraternity. At the ROTC awards ceremony recently, Warner received recognition as the top cadet in his class. In addition to ROTC activities, he has distinguished himself this year as a starting member of the John Carroll University Lacrosse team.

Warner says that it was during his sophomore year in high school that he decided he was going to be an officer in the United States Army, and a leader of men. A strong sense of patriotism and a grandpa that fought the Japanese in World War II motivated him to join the military. When asked why he chose the Army over the other services, Warner coolly replies, “I wanted to be in the greatest branch of the United States Armed Forces.”

Although he had offers to attain his commission through programs at the Citadel and Virginia Military Institute, he chose John Carroll because of its high-quality liberal arts education. His favorite part about the Wolfpack is the strong camaraderie that its Cadets share. Warner hopes to branch into Armor so cavalry soldiers should be on the lookout for a hard-charging, up-and-coming junior officer in 2010.
