LTC Donald J. Hazelwood, Jr.

Professor of Military Science

LTC Donald J. Hazelwood, Jr. was born 26 March 1970 in Agana, Guam.  He entered the Army on 17 June 1988, receiving Basic and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Knox, KY, prior to reporting as an M1 Armor Crewman for 3-37 AR at Fort Riley, Kansas in SEP 1988.  He received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1989, and graduated as a CBRN Officer in MAY 1993.  Career highlights include:  S-3 Air for 1-7 FA during Uphold Democracy in Haiti from SEP 1994 thru JAN 1995; Company Command of HHC, 20th Corps Material Management Center at Fort Lewis, WA from AUG 1998 thru MAY 2000; CBRN War Planner at the Combined Land Forces Component Command (CFLCC) at Camp Doha, Kuwait from NOV 2001 thru JUN 2002 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom; Battalion Executive Officer, 2-409th CAV (Training Support) in Knoxville, TN from DEC 2003 thru MAY 2005; and various assignments for the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force – Afghanistan (CJSOTF-A) and Combined Special Operations Component Command – Afghanistan (CFSOCC-A) with deployments from APR – AUG 2006, MAR – OCT 2007, OCT – NOV 2008, and JAN – JUL 2009.  He is a graduate of the CBRN Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Airborne and Air Assault Schools, and the Command and Staff General College.  Some of his awards include the BSM (1 OLC), DMSM, MSM (1 OLC), JSCM, ARCOM (1OLC), AAM (1 OLC) and the JMUA. 

He is married to the former Sheryl Layman of Sevierville, TN, and his children include Xane, Sydney, Boston, Raleigh, and Kingston.  He assumed duties as the Professor of Military Science on 1 JUN 2010.

Mr. Kevin P. Wallace

Assistant Professor of Military Science

Kevin P. Wallace entered the U.S. Army as a distinguished military graduate of John Carroll University’s Reserve Officer Training Corps program.  His assignments include tours in the continental United States and two tours in Europe.

During his military career, he has served in a variety of command and staff positions which include: Faculty/Seminar Leader 11th/95th Officer Education Battalion, Operations and Marketing Officer for the Cleveland Army Recruiting Battalion, Aviation Division Chief 21st Theater Support Command (CONUS), S-3 Operations Officer 7-159th Aviation Regiment, Executive Officer A/7-159th Aviation Regiment, Company Commander 3-502nd Aviation Regiment, S-4 Logistical Officer 3-502nd Aviation Regiment, Platoon Leader 6-101st Aviation Regiment, Assistant S-4 Logistical Officer 1-101st Aviation Regiment, and Assistant S-3 Operations Officer 55th Attack Helicopter Battalion.

Mr. Wallace holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Cleveland State University, and a  Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Phoenix.  His military education includes the Aviation Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Initial Entry Rotary Wing Course, UH-60 Maintenance Test Pilot Course, Air Assault School, the U.S. Army Combined Arms and Services Staff School, and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.

Mr. Wallace’s awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, National Defense Service Medal (2nd award), Global War of Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal With "M" Device, Overseas Service Ribbon (2nd award) Reserve Overseas Training Ribbon (4th award) the Senior Army Aviator Badge, and the Air Assault Badge.

Mr. Wallace is married to the former Kim Leigh Griffin and they have one  daughter.

 

Major Matthew M. McGraw

Assistant Professor of Military Science

Major Matt McGraw is a native to northeast Ohio.  He graduated from the University of Toledo with a Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering in 2002.  Major McGraw was commissioned in the United States Army through the Reserve Officer Training Corps and assigned to the Aviation Branch.

After completion of the Aviation Officer Basic Course and initial flight training in the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior he was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment along the DMZ in South Korea.  While there he served as the Squadron 3/5 Platoon Leader and an Aero-scout Platoon Leader.  Upon completion of the tour in Korea he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 10th Aviation Regiment.  There he served as a Company Executive Officer and Platoon Leader and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 05-07.  Major McGraw remained with his unit when it was re-flagged to the Sixth Squadron, Sixth Cavalry Regiment where he served as the commander of Bravo Troop during his second deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 09-11.  After returning from Iraq he and his wife Katherine were stationed in Cleveland, OH where he currently serves as the APMS – Operations Officer at John Carroll University.

Major McGraw’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Korean Defense Service Ribbon, Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Medal, the Senior Army Aviator’s Badge, the Air Assault Badge, and the Parachutist Badge.

 

MSG Christopher L. Turkturk

Senior Military Instructor

MSG Christopher Turk is a native of Matawan, New Jersey.  He was born February 20th 1973, and entered the Army Reserve National Guard as Indirect Fire Infantryman on 11 April 1990 at the age of 17.  He received Basic Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, GA. In March of 1992 he enlisted into the active Army as a 91B (63B), Light Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic and attended AIT at Fort Jackson, SC.

MSG Turk has served in a variety of positions to include; Light Wheel Vehicle Mechanic, ULLS/PLL operator & NCOIC, Squad Leader, Recovery Specialist, Recovery Team NCOIC, Shop Foreman, Basic Training Drill Sergeant, AIT  (91B) Drill Sergeant, Platoon Sergeant, Master Fitness NCO, Company Motor Sergeant, Battalion Motor Sergeant, QRF NCOIC, Combat Support Hospital First Sergeant, NCOIC of Ordnance Center and School Quality Assurance Evaluation Office, Infantry FSC First Sergeant, and Senior Military Instructor at John Carroll University

His CONUS assignments include; two assignments at Fort Bragg, North Carolina with the 35th Sig Bde ABN and 1/321st FAR ABN; Fort Jackson, South Carolina with B/2/39 IN and B/187th OD BN (Drill Sergeant); Fort Campbell, Kentucky, with the 86 CSH Air Assault; Fort Lee, VA (duty at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland) as with HQ, CASCOM; Caserma Ederle (Vicenza), Italy with HHC 173D ABCT and Fusion Company 2D BN(ABN) 503D Infantry.

His overseas assignments include three combat tours, two tours in Iraq, with the 86TH Combat Support Hospital (Air Assault); and one tour in Afghanistan (Kunar and Wardak Provinces) with Fusion CO, 2D BN (ABN) 503D Infantry. He also served in Alaska with the 1st BN 501ST Parachute Infantry Regiment and in Vicenza, Italy with the 173 Airborne Brigade Combat Team and 2D BN (ABN) 503D Infantry.

During the course of his career, MSG Turk has attended and graduated; The Primary Leadership Course; The Basic Noncommissioned Officers Course; The Advanced Noncommissioned Officers Course; Drill Sergeant School; First Sergeants Course; Jump Master School; Airborne School; Air Assault School; Combat Lifesaver Course; Motorpool Operations and Management course; ULLS-G Operator/Supervisor Course; Recovery Specialist Course; Master Fitness Trainer Course; Instructor/Writers Course; Systems Approach to Training Course; Training Developer Middle Manager Course; Senior Training Manager Course; Quality Assurance Evaluator Course; Operations Security Officer Course.

MSG Turk is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Leadership and has an AAS degree in Automotive Maintenance from Thomas Edison State College.

MSG Turk is presently assigned to John Carroll University as the Senior Military Instructor for Military Science. MSG Turk and his wife Angie have been married for 17 years. They have a 9 year old son, Nicolas.

 

SFC John B. Johnson

Military Science Instructor

Sergeant First Class Johnson is a native of Rogersville, TN.  He enlisted in the United States Army in November 1997 and was placed in the delayed entry program.  He shipped for One Station Unit Training (OSUT) as an Infantryman at Ft. Benning, GA. in Jan 1998.  Since his enlistment he has served with HHC 1st BN 32nd INF Ft. Drum, NY, HHC 2nd BN 72nd AR Camp Casey Korea, B co. and A co. 2nd BN 327th INF, A TRP 1st SQD 32nd CAV of the 1st BDE 101st ABN DIV Ft. Campbell, KY.  He spent his third year with 1-32 INF as a 81mm Mortar Squad leader before assuming the position as a 120mm Mortar Squad leader with 2/72 AR for one year.  SFC Johnson arrived at B Company 2/327 INF as an E-5 and was placed as the company 60mm Mortar Section Leader.  Within four years, he was promoted to the rank of SFC and was reassigned as the Platoon Sergeant for A company, first platoon.  SFC Johnson transferred to A TRP 1-32 CAV where he maintained the position as the 120mm Mortar Section Leader.  Currently he serves as the Military Science Instructor assigned to John Carroll University.


He is a graduate of Air Assault School; Infantry Mortar Platoon Officer Course; Warrior Leaders Course; Advanced Leaders Course; Senior Leaders Course; and the 101st ABN DIV Eagle First Responder Course.

SFC Johnson participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom I, IV, 07-09 in An Najaf, Al Hillah, Mosul, Kirkuk and Balad Iraq.  Additionally he served in support of Operation Enduring Freedom XI in Kunar Province, Afghanistan.

He currently holds 36 credit hours towards his Bachelor’s degree in General Studies thru Peirce College of Lakewood, Washington.

SFC Johnson’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Valorous Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Award with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Good Conduct (fourth Award), National Defense Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with one Star, Iraqi Campaign Medal with two stars, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Non Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon with numeral three, Army Service Ribbon, Over Seas Service Ribbon with numeral five, Multi National Forces Medal and the ISAF NATO Service Medal.  SFC Johnson additionally earned the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Air Assault Badge, and Drivers Badge with “W” device and has been awarded The Order of Saint Maurice (CENTURION).

SFC Johnson is married to the former Leslie Dail Murphy of New Haven, Connecticut.

Mr. Reiter retired after 21 years of service in the Army as a Sergeant First Class.  His main duties included being a M-1 Armor Crewman

and an Army Medical Recruiter.

Mrs. Krebs has worked at John Carroll University since August 2000 and has been the Department of Military Science Secretary

since August 2006.  She is a native of Cleveland, Ohio, and holds B.A. in English from Ursuline College.
