LA PROVIDENCIA PODIATRY CLINIC (11/12)
La Providencia Hispanic Senior Center

A Cleveland Catholic Charities Community Service Program, La Providencia Hispanic Senior Center serves residents of the Hispanic community in Cleveland and offers a variety of programming and support services to Hispanic community members. The Hispanic population is growing at a rapid pace in greater Cleveland, many thousands of whom are 60 years of age or older. The poverty rate among Hispanic seniors is an astronomical 74.6 percent according to a 1989 study by the Hispanic Community Forum and the Federation for Community Planning. More than 30 percent of these seniors face the culturally unexpected experience of social isolation; living alone and out of contact with family, friends or peers. Further, language and cultural barriers make healthcare, housing, and general socialization systems even more difficult to access. A high percentage of the Hispanic senior population suffers from chronic illnesses such as diabetes, arthritis, and hypertension.

Service participants in this activity will assist with the bi-monthly podiatry clinic by checking in elderly clients, helping them to complete paperwork, etc.

Participants need not be fluent in Spanish but should have some ability to converse in Spanish.

The centerpiece of this initiative is a multimedia exhibit that highlights four compelling stories about individuals or groups that challenge us to consider the connections to stories in our own lives and around the world.
