Transportation is NOT provided.

Service participants in this activity will observe the monthly "Healthy Heart Screening" offered by Marymount Hospital to low-income members of the local community. Services provided include free glucose, cholesterol and blood pressue checks.

Participants should report to Jackie Trenton at the Door 4 lobby on the west end of the hospital. Participants will receive a brief orientation about confidentiality prior to their service, as they will be dealing with patient test results.

Cleveland Food Bank

The mission of the Cleveland Foodbank is to alleviate hunger by providing food and support to community organizations that feed the hungry. The Foodbank serves as a clearinghouse for donated and rescued food in the Cleveland area, which is then distributed to hunger programs across the city. Last Year, the Foodbank distributed over 20 million pounds of food to more than 450 area food pantries, hot meal programs, shelters, child-care centers and homes for the elderly.

One or two evenings every month during the academic year are designated as "JCU Night" at the Cleveland Food Bank. Service participants assist in indirect service in the Repack Warehouse, where they help to sort and repack nonperishable food that is later distributed to local food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters.

NOTE: Participants are encouraged to bring a sweater or light jacket, as the warehouse can be chilly.

Circle K International

"Through the Eyes of a Child" is an annual event sponsored by Circle K International in which 100 Cleveland children visit JCU's campus for several hours of holiday fun and activities. This year's event will be held on Saturday, December 5, from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm and activities will include cookie decorating, story time, a visit with Santa, arts and crafts, time in the gym, and lunch in the cafeteria. This year, the children will come from St. Thomas and St. Francis Elementary schools in Cleveland.  Each child will be paired with a JCU student. JCU students are asked to spend up to $20 to purchase a gift for their "little buddy" (Santa will give the child the gift, of course!) This is a great event for anyone who is looking for a fun and rewarding service project for the holiday season.

Service participants in this activity will assist with wrapping gifts for Circle K's annual "Through the Eyes of a Child" holiday event.

NOTE: This activity takes place in room AD 48 in the administration building at JCU.  Registered participants should go directly to room AD 48 at 8:00pm and report to Courtney Maistros, who will take attendance and give you instructions as to how to proceed.

FATIMA GIVING TREE PROJECT (NOVEMBER 17)

A Cleveland Catholic Charities Community Services Program, Fatima Family Center is a multi-purpose neighborhood center serving the Hough-Central area.  This year, Fatima is a designated recipient of JCU's annual "Giving Tree" program.

Participants will research requested gift items from Fatima Family Center to determine approximate price and to see if there are any product recalls on the items. 

NOTE: This service opportunity takes place on the campus of John Carroll University. Participants should meet in room AD10, on the first floor of the administration building in the hall between the Mail Center and Einstein Bagels (not far from the Students with Disabilities office).

Circle K International

Circle K is a JCU Student Organization dedicated to "developing college and university students into responsible citizens and leaders with a lifelong commitment to serving the children of the world. Circle K International is a collegiate service organization with a worldwide membership that promotes fellowship, leadership, and service."

This activity involves providing support to one of Circle K's annual events, the "Through the Eyes of a Child" Christmas party for elementary school children in Cleveland-area schools.  Participants in this activity will assist in creating posters and signage to advertise and recruit student volunteers for the event.

JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER
Self-Placement

NOTE: This is a restricted service activity and is not open for registration. If you are interested in participating in this service, please contact the Center for Service and Social Action office at 216.397.4698.

The Detention Services division of the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court System manages the care of all juveniles in the secure detention continuum, including the Detention Center, Shelter Care and Home Detention. Ohio Law permits juvenile courts to commit juveniles to a detention facility for up to 90 days. The goal of the Juvenile Detention Center is to help these residents become more productive citizens when released to the community. Trained staff, volunteers and student interns facilitate a variety of programming available to residents, which addresses such issues as youth violence, chemical dependency, job readiness and life skills. In addition, educational instruction is provided to the residents through the Cleveland Public School System via on-site classrooms and teachers.

The service participant in this activity will assist with the development of a "Parent Orientation Program" at the Detention Center and also help with researching funding opportunities in support of the re-entry program.

NOTE: Service participants for this activity must have completed the following in order to participate in this activity:

  1. An application and agreement to submit to background checks and fingerprinting (there will be NO CHARGE for this to participants).
  2. Two (2) reference forms

Failure to complete these requirements will result in removal from the activity. In addition, participants are encouraged to read these Volunteer Guidelines prior to their start of service.

FACING HISTORY AND OURSELVES (TUESDAY)
Facing History and Ourselves

Facing History and Ourselves has been dedicated to fostering thoughtful dialogue in classrooms and communities about issues of tolerance and civic responsibility for 30 years. Our mission is to engage students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice, and antisemitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry. The Choosing to Participate exhibit is a multi-faceted educational and civic initiative created by Facing History and Ourselves that challenges us to examine our biases and consider the responsibilities of citizenship. The centerpiece of this initiative is a multimedia exhibit that highlights four compelling stories about individuals or groups that challenge us to consider the connections to stories in our own lives and around the world.

Service participants are trained as guides for the exhibition, leading school and community groups through the various components of the exhibit, giving tours, and facilitating discussions.

NOTE: This is a weekly activity that runs from October 20th through December 8th. Service participants for this activity MUST attend a mandatory training session on Saturday, Sept. 12th from 9:30-3:30. Transportation will be provided.

5 hours service credit will ALSO be given for attending the orientation.

Service participants should be independent, reliable, interested in working with children and possess good communication skills. An interest in history and public service preferred. Bilingual applicants are encouraged.

CHAMPS is a grant-funded enriched program designed to serve the needs of at-risk youth in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights schools. The program meets daily after school and provides instruction in reading and math, homework assistance, social skills training, and recreation. CHAMPS serves to work with the whole child and to provide support in a variety of ways.

This service activity involves assisting CHAMPS students in 6-8th grade. Service participants provide academic assistance and serve as role models to the students, and will have an opportunity to work with the children in both individual and group settings. Service participants may also be engaged in various recreational and social-skills building activities. All CHAMPS activities are planned and organized by on-site teachers.

NOTE: This service opportunity is within walking distance of JCU; most students are able to walk to this site in about 15 minutes (view a map here).  Should you choose to register for this service activity, you will still receive an automated email confirmation which will instruct you to "Meet your driver on Administration Drive." CHAMPS (TUESDAY-ROXBORO)
CHAMPS Program

CHAMPS is a grant-funded program offered to at-risk youth in elementary and middle school students in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights schools. The focus is on academics, social skills, and recreation.

Service participants will divide between Roxboro Elementary and Roxboro Middle schools, and may express a preference as to the age group with whom they would like to work. NOTE: Service participants who need to work with a specific age group (such as "children in K-5") to fulfill a service requirement for a course will have priority in selecting their site. 

All participants will provide academic assistance, participate in recreational and social skill-building activities, and serve as role models for the students. Activities are planned and organized by on-site CHAMPS teachers, and participants have the opportunity to build relationships with students.
