ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Center for Service and Social Action believes that service activities coordinated between our office, service participants (JCU students, staff, or alumni), community partners, and Service Learning faculty members (where applicable) are most successful when all the parties involved have a clear understanding of the expectations associated with the service.

SERVICE PARTICIPANTS will:

  • Enroll for service on the Center for Service and Social Action website prior to registering for service activities sponsored by our office
  • Attend a Pre-Service Orientation session (student participants only)
  • Complete all mandatory requirements and/or training for your service activity (if any)
  • Participate, actively and dependably, in the service activity/ies for which you have registered
  • Sign in/out of the Service Hour Tracking Sheet at your service site
  • Behave professionally; comply with the dress and conduct codes and respect the confidentiality standards of your service site
  • Notify the Center for Service and Social Action at 216.397.4698 at least 24 hours in advance of an absence
  • Communicate with the Center for Service and Social Action about your service experience, and feel free to contact us with any questions, concerns, or ideas for improvement of our program

SERVICE LEARNING FACULTY will:

  • Call the Center for Service and Social Action office at x4698 to enroll as a Service Learning Faculty Member
  • Contact Director Peggy Finucane to register a course/es for service learning at least 3 weeks prior to the start of the semester
  • Identify any community issues and preferrred service sites or service activities which you believe to be of particular relevance to your course
  • Discuss with your students your expectations, goals, and requirements for the service learning component of your course
  • Provide your students with reflection activities or structure class discussions to give them an opportunity to share their service experiences and integrate them into the course content
  • Contact the Center for Service and Social Justice immediately should you become aware of any problem with a student's service site
  • Communicate with the Center for Service and Social Action about your service learning experience, and feel free to contact us with any questions, concerns, or ideas for improvement of our program

THE CENTER FOR SERVICE AND SOCIAL ACTION will:

  • Support and facilitate all components of our service participant, faculty, and community partner relationships
  • Work with faculty to develop service activities which will support and enhance students' academic coursework
  • Identify and recruit Community Partners with whom we can create rich and rewarding service opportunities in agreement with the CSSA mission
  • Host and conduct pre-service orientation sessions for service participants
  • Provide access to all pre-requisite training and special testing for service sites sponsored through our office
  • Coordinate service participants' enrollment and registration for service via our web-based system
  • Provide transportation to and from most service learning sites
  • Track service hours for all service participants enrolled through our office
  • Publicize service opportunities and provide service informatiom through our website and via email postings
  • Maintain regular contact with service participants, faculty members, and community partners
  • Seek and respond to feedback from community agencies partners, service participants, and faculty

COMMUNITY PARTNERS will:

  • Designate a staff member to serve as liaison with the Center for Service and Social Action office
  • Send all necessary information to the CSSA office for posting of your service opportunity, including service descpritions, contact names, days/times of service, policies and regulations, yearly calendar, and images
  • Provide a safe and supportive environment in which the community partner's staff, clients, etc. and JCU service participants may interact
  • Sign JCU Service Hour Tracking Sheets and fax them to our office at 216.397.1661 in a timely manner
  • Check-in with JCU Service Participants occasionally to get feedback on their service experience
  • Contact the Center for Service and Social Justice immediately about any misconduct on the part of a JCU Service Participant
  • Notify the Center for Service and Social Action at 216.397.4698 at least 24 hours in advance of a service cancellation, if possible
  • Communicate with the Center for Service and Social Action about your service experience, and feel free to contact us with any questions, concerns, or ideas for improvement of our program
