VOLUNTARY SERVICE
Voluntary Service Opportunities are activities which are not sponsored by the Center for Service and Social Action (CSSA), but which might be of interest to JCU students, staff, faculty, and alumni who are looking for service opportunities. Activities are updated monthly.
The Center for Service and Social Action does not coordinate registration, transportation, or service hour tracking for these activities. Voluntary service requirements (in terms of time commitment, special training, and/or background checks) can vary. Persons interested in partcipating in a volunteer opportunity are encouraged to contact the designated site coordinator for more details.
Opportunity Site: Nature Center at Shaker Lakes
Description: Volunteers needed to assist with annual Plant Sale; as chaperones on field trips for 3rd and 4th grade school children; to help with Outdoor Adventure Classes over the summer; to assist office staff with mailings, filing, etc.; and to greet guests at the Welcome Desk on Saturday mornings. Opportunity Site: Sisters of Notre Dame Summer 2008 Activities
Description: The Sisters of Notre Dame invite single women, ages 18-40 to participate in a five-day program
of summer service with the Sisters. Experiences include:
• Working with children in a crisis care center in Cleveland
• Assisting with a summer bible camp for inner-city children in Los Angeles
• Assisting with migrant ministry in Dayton and Toledo

Opportunity Site: Fatima Family Center
Description: Modeling EXPO 101 is an eight-week workshop that will give teen young ladies and men the skills, experience, and opportunity to learn how to become a model. The workshops will focus on etiquette, appearance, communication skills, and healthy living. Facilitators are needed to present on these various topics, or to speak about the career of modeling, fashion design, and similar professions. The goal of the workshop is not only increase teen’s knowledge of a modeling career, but to also increase self esteem, improve self confidence, and enable them to work with peers on a common goal.

Opportunity Site: 2100 Lakeside Listening Ministry
Description: 2100 Lakeside Men's Shelter is looking for volunteers who can make a regular (weekly, semi-weekly, monthly) commitment to spend two hours as a listening volunteer at the shelter. Members of the Listening Ministry would need to complete two 2-hour training sessions. Then, they would offer their “listening presence” to men at 2100, meeting informally and in unstructured settings. Periodic debriefing sessions for “listening volunteers” will be held to offer continued support and skill-building opportunities.

Opportunity Site: Children’s Hunger Alliance
Healthy Kids Year of Service Opportunity
Description: We currently have 2 part-time positions available in the Cleveland area. All members commit to a one-year service period. Part-time members work with several different community and faith-based afterschool programs, school classrooms, and children’s community groups in economically depressed areas of Cleveland to teach nutrition education and physical activity education to low-income children.

Opportunity Site: Crossroads Hospice
Description: Several types of service opportunities are available through Crossroads Hospice. Volunteers are needed to participate in "friendly patient visits" with hospice clients in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and private homes. Other opportunities include working on special projects, helping in the head office (located in Hudson), and assisting with bereavement.
Crossroads is also looking for assistance with their "Ultimate Gift" program, designed to help the patient and family experience a very special day through various activities. A one-time training session lasting about 2-3 hours is required to participate in most Hospice service activities.

Opportunity Site: St. Procop Catholic Church Community Meal
Description: Volunteers needed to assist in serving weekly meal to about 200 community members on Friday evenings from 4:30-6:30pm. Please contact site coordinator to register to volunteer, as need varies from week to week.

Opportunity Site: South Euclid- Lyndhurst Branch of Cuyahoga Public Library
Description: The Homework Center of the South Euclid-Lyndhurst Library is in need of Education students to assist with tutoring students in 7th through 10th grade.
The Homework Center is open Monday through Thursday from 4.30 to 7.00 p.m.
and offers free homework assistance and internet access. Students most often require help with Math, Science and languages.

Opportunity Site: Nativity Prep Academy, San Diego
Year of Service Opportunity
Description: In partnership with the University of San Diego's School of Leadership & Education Sciences and with the AmeriCorps National Service Program, Nativity Prep Academy is currently recruiting for three (3) full-time intern teacher positions for the 2008-2009 school year. Full-time intern teachers are eligible for:
- a monthly stipend for room and board, and an additional monthly living stipend;
- full medical insurance (including dental) and partial eye-care coverage;
- after their second year of teaching, a full-tuition scholarship to earn a single-subject (i.e., secondary education) teaching credential through the School of Leadership & Education Sciences at the University of San Diego;
- in their third year, a beginning teacher salary of ~ $30,000.
