La Providencia Hispanic Senior Center

across from St. Augustine Towers
3700 Detroit Avenue
Cleveland ,  OH  44102

Phone: (216) 631-3599

Description:
A Cleveland Catholic Charities Community Service Program, La Providencia Hispanic Senior Center serves residents of the Hispanic community in Cleveland and offers a variety of programming and support services to Hispanic community members. The Hispanic population is growing at a rapid pace in greater Cleveland, many thousands of whom are 60 years of age or older. The poverty rate among Hispanic seniors is an astronomical 74.6 percent according to a 1989 study by the Hispanic Community Forum and the Federation for Community Planning. More than 30 percent of these seniors face the culturally unexpected experience of social isolation; living alone and out of contact with family, friends or peers. Further, language and cultural barriers make healthcare, housing, and general socialization systems even more difficult to access. A high percentage of the Hispanic senior population suffers from chronic illnesses such as diabetes, arthritis, and hypertension.

What we do there:
Service participants at La Providencia assist elderly residents in learning English as a second language in an informal setting. Participants should have strong Spanish skills and be willing to partner with the seniors by helping them with basic translation needs (paying bills, writing letters, etc.) and in creating simple activities that will help the seniors to learn some basic English.
