Description:
"We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution" is an instructional program on the principles of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights for elementary, middle, and high school students. The program goal is to promote understanding of the principles and values on which our political institutions are based. The "We the People" program is administered through a national network of direct coordinators. The program is available to public and private elementary and secondary schools in congressional districts, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Types of Projects
Participating schools implement a curriculum that focuses on promoting citizenship education and increasing students' understanding of the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. Activities include simulated congressional hearings with community members as judges and an annual national competition in which secondary student teams compete in simulated congressional hearings. Other programs administered under We the People include Project Citizen and the School Violence Prevention Demonstration Project.
What we do there:
Service participants in this activity pair with students in grades 5-9 in local schools to teach the U.S. Constitution. Participants meet weekly to prepare lesson plans, and then visit the schools once a week to lead students in activities and exercises that reinforce learning about the Constitution and its role in our society. The project culminates in a Mock Congressional Hearing held at John Carroll University at the end of the school year.

The Holy Name Elementary School Philosophy is based on the Catholic Philosophy of Education: the whole child must be considered in developing a school's educational program. Our school exists to provide the services necessary which enable our parents and teachers to guide the children in becoming responsible Catholic Christians in a contemporary world.
It is the goal of the Holy Name Faculty and Staff to nurture each student to become a well-rounded individual: one who is prepared to carry out the duties of a student, citizen, worker, and child of God. A concerted effort is made in partnership with parent/guardians to provide opportunities for each child to develop morally, intellectually, aesthetically, emotionally, and socially with faith as a core value in each of their lives.
Service participants in this activity will assist in tutoring and reading literacy activities for seventh-grade students. | September 22, 2009 to December 8, 20092 PM to 3 PM No Spots Available WE THE PEOPLE (TUESDAY ST. MARY CHARDON) We the People Program
