Description:
Open Doors, Inc. is an afterschool enrichment program that focuses on the social, emotional, and academic development of middle school youth. Our mission is to nurture, protect, inspire and challenge adolescents to reach their full potential through the provision of meaningful out-of-school enrichment activities. Programming includes community time, educational sessions, field trips and community service activities, arts enrichment activities, and athletics.
What we do there:
Service activities (and sites) vary depending on the day of service.
Monday participants serve at St. Paul's Episcopal Church and help with “Move Your Groove Mondays,” designated for physical education and sports activities such as kickball, relay races, walking, basketball, hoola hoop contests, and more. Service participants are strongly encouraged to bring their own athletic skills and program ideas to this site.
Tuesday participants serve at the Fairmount Presbyterian site and assist with the Tuesday Tutoring Program, designed for students who could benefit from additional help to improve their math and reading skills. The purpose of the program is to assist students with developing effective learning and study skills rather then simply completing their homework. Students will be matched one-on-one with volunteers.
Wednesday participants serve at the First Unitarian Church and help with ArtSpace. Arts enrichment activities can include hiphop dance, arts and crafts, creative writing, cooking, computer graphic design, and more. Service participants are strongly encouraged to bring their own skills and program ideas to this site.
