Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a national nonprofit organization that promotes early literacy by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud in pediatric exam rooms across the nation. The ROR program provides the tools to help promote children's developmental skills and later school success.

Service participants in this activity will read to children in the Pediatric Waiting room at Huron Hospital, modeling book-sharing techniques for parents and showing them by example that reading aloud is fun for parent and child.

• assisting with dietary selection, preparing patients for mealtime, getting beverages 
• reviewing educational materials, distributing reading materials 
• surveying patients relative to their patient care, responding to call lights 
• providing spiritual counseling, listening and conversing
• returning medical equipment, conducting clerical assignments, assembling patient admission packets
• providing other support services as requested by appropriate staff
