Open Doors Afterschool Enrichment (Shaker Heights)

First Unitarian Church
21600 Shaker Boulevard
Shaker Heights ,  OH  44122

Phone: (216) 991-4353

Description:
The Open Doors After School Enrichment Program is a free after school program that offers middle school students the opportunity for academic support, social bonding and enrichment activities 4 days a week. Most of the students we serve lack after school support and are often going home alone to an empty house, and many need a positive place in which to “fit.”Open Doors provides a safe, nurturing and engaging environment for these students to be in. Along with homework help and study skills, we offer a range of activities, including arts and crafts, creative writing, team building, leadership skills, community service, cooking and life skills discussion groups.

What we do there:
Service participants at Open Doors--Shaker assist in a variety of activities depending on the day of service. They may help prepare and serve snacks, work one on one and in small groups with students helping with homework, and/or working on the day’s activity. Volunteers may help organize and play indoor and outdoor games, participate in small group discussions, help with creative projects or cooking, and model for students how to communicate and interact with others. Because Open Doors is an after school program, it is less formal than a traditional classroom. However, the programming follows a set structure and activities are pre-planned for every day.
