Description:
Koinoina’s mission is partnering with people who have developmental disabilities to achieve healthy, fulfilling, enriched lives. Koinonia Homes, Inc. (coin-oh-knee-ah) is a private, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides residential and vocational services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) throughout Cuyahoga County, Ohio. We are the largest provider of IDD services in the county.

What we do there:
Participants in this service activity will facilitate a Next Chapter Book Club (NCBC). This national organization provides adolescents and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to meet weekly to read, learn to read, talk about books, and make friends in a fun, community setting. This activity will include reading as well as watching a movie that goes along with the book, doing crafts, and holding discussion groups. The goal is to make it fun and creative! Participants will be trained to be NCBC facilitators, and will aid the clients with the reading process under the guidance of Koinonia’s recreational therapist. Koinonia clients who cannot read themselves will still enjoy the pleasure of being part of a group and participating in the book discussions and other activities. After each chapter is read, service participants lead the discussions by asking easy comprehension questions. The books are adapted classics (mostly on a forth to fifth grade reading level). Participants will begin each week's session with a "recap" of the week before.
