Facing History and Ourselves

Western Reserve Historical Society
10825 East Boulevard
Cleveland ,  OH  44106

Phone: (216) 321-9220

Description:
Facing History and Ourselves has been dedicated to fostering thoughtful dialogue in classrooms and communities about issues of tolerance and civic responsibility for 30 years. Our mission is to engage students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice, and anti-Semitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry. The Choosing to Participate exhibit is a multi-faceted educational and civic initiative created by Facing History and Ourselves that challenges us to examine our biases and consider the responsibilities of citizenship. The centerpiece of this initiative is a multimedia exhibit that highlights four compelling stories about individuals or groups that challenge us to consider the connections to stories in our own lives and around the world.

What we do there:
Service participants are trained as guides for the exhibition, and lead school and community groups through the various components of the exhibit, giving tours and facilitating discussions. Guides must be willing to commit to one training session on Saturday, Sept. 12th from 9:30-3:30. In addition, Guides will be required to attend a walk-through of the exhibition. Guides should be independent, reliable, interested in working with children and possess good communication skills. An interest in history and public service preferred. Bilingual applicants are encouraged.
