Description:
The Church of the Covenant’s Saturday Tutoring Program (STP), founded in 1990, is a community-wide tutoring program that provides free academic help for students in grades 1-12 on Saturday mornings during the school year. The main goals of the Saturday Tutoring Program are to:
help students pass the Ohio Graduation Test, improve their grades, and deepen their understanding of school subjects.
create a small-group learning environment where caring adult volunteers help students build their self esteem, and realize the value of education and community involvement.
provide real-world experiences that enrich the students’ education via two annual field trips to local cultural institutions.
What we do there:
JCU participants will serve as tutors during two-hour sessions on Saturday mornings. As students in grades 1 - 12 arrive at the site, they are matched with a tutor who can cover the subject that they need to study. Tutors and students usually work on homework, school assignments, or standardized test preparation. Tutors clarify information, guide students through practice problems, check for understanding, and provide encouragement. During a brief refreshment break, the students and tutors have time to build rapport. Toward the end of each session, the students review what was covered and practice their writing skills. Tutors write a brief summary of the day's activities on the students’ progress sheets.
Tutoring requires the patience and compassion to work with children/youth who are struggling with their academic work, and familiarity with the subject(s) to be covered. Materials are provided and sessions are supervised by retired teachers.
