Description:
GED stands for General Educational Development Tests, a battery of examinations administered by states and jurisdictions to measure the skills and knowledge similar to a high school course of study. A GED credential documents that a person has high school-level academic skills. About 96 percent of U.S. employers and 95% of U.S. universities accept the GED credential as equal to a traditional high school diploma. GED tests were first developed in 1942 to help returning World War II veterans finish their high school studies and reenter civilian life. Since that time, the program has opened to persons who have not completed high school for a variety of reasons. In 2007, more than 728,000 adults worldwide took some portion of the GED test battery. Of that total, more than 614,000 (86%) completed the battery of five tests and 451,000 earned passing scores on the five-test battery.
What we do there:
Service participants tutor community members who are seeking to pass their GED examinations at various locations.

Service Participants in this activity will assist with tutoring area residents who are preparing to take their GED exam. Participants do NOT need a teacher certification to be a competent GED tutor, but they should have a good grasp of basic algebra. Participants should also be patient, be able to explain effective study skills, and have a good command of written English.
NOTE: This is a new service activity and in the early stages of development. As such, participants should expect some inconsistencies in terms of residents' ability to attend GED tutoring. It is possible that on some weeks, participants in this activity will NOT engage in direct service, but rather assist with support activities for the program. Participants who are uncomfortable with this are encouraged to select a different service activity.
