These programs involve participation with individuals with physical, sensory, or developmental disabilities; service participants should be patient and understanding. Service participants who are uncomfortable working with this population are encouraged to select a different activity.
All students who are accepted for this service activity will be required to:
- Make an intentional effort to interact with adaptive participants, not just with other JCU volunteers. The success of the program depends upon participants of all abilities interacting together.

NOTE: Transportation is NOT provided to this activity. This service opportunity is within walking distance of JCU; most students are able to walk to this site in about 10-15 minutes.
NOTE: All students who register for this service activity MUST:
- Register for and attend a Pre Service Orientation Session the week of January 28th.
- Interview and go through volunteer screening at Bellefaire JCB.
- Participate in service and sign-in each week at the site.

Only those students who have been APPROVED by the CSSA office may register for this activity.

DESCRIPTION: We the People Service-Learning Program includes this new program for eighth grade students, Youth for Justice. JCU tutors will help 8th grade classes research and present topics of injustice. Participants will meet weekly to prepare and then co-facilitate lessons with a team of fellow tutors in their assigned classroom. The project culminates in a Youth for Justice Summit in the spring of 2013 on JCU’s campus.
All students who are accepted for this service activity will be required to:
- Register for and attend the WTP training workshop on January 26th, 2013.
- Meet with team to prepare weekly lessons and submit lessons each Sunday prior to weekly service.
- Participate in weekly service at the site.
Optional: Participate in AR 144/244/344/444 Practicum for 0 or 1-credit.

Service participants in this activity assist Boys & Girls Club youth who may have some difficulty in completing homework assignments. Participants will also assist program staff in facilitating such activities as basketball games/tournaments, kickball, fitness challenges, board game tournaments, and arts and crafts.
All students who register for this service activity will be required to:
- Attend a Pre-Service Workshop Session the week of January 28th.
- Complete a waiver and agreement to submit to a background check and upload the completed waiver to their participant profile by Wednesday, February 6th.
- Participate in weekly service at this site.

Participation in service at Rainbow Hospital is contingent upon a students' completion of the application process and approval by Rainbow.
NOTE: Transportation to this activity and to the mandatory Rainbow General Training Session is NOT provided!
DESCRIPTION: Imagine a world where all children are read to and have the chance to enjoy books on a regular basis. Young children who are read to gain an appreciation for books and are better prepared to excel at reading, a vital skill for success in life. For many Rainbow patients, being read to is a rare treat! Participants in this activity will select books and share stories with infants and children in the waiting area of Rainbow Hospital's Outpatient Women and Children’s Clinic.
ALL students who register for this service activity will be required to:
- Register for and attend a Pre-Service Workshop Session the week of January 28th.
- Transport themselves to and from service; transportation is NOT provided.
- Complete an application and upload it to your participant profile by Monday, January 28th.
- Forward a reference form to two (2) people who are not related to you and have them return it to our office by Monday, January 28th.
- Complete a background check through JCU's Campus Safety Service office by Monday, January 28th.
- Complete a TB test through JCU's Health Center by Monday, January 28th.
- Attend a General Training Session at Rainbow Hospital.
- Participate in an interview with and be approved for service by the volunteer coordinator at Rainbow. Transportation is NOT provided to this interview.
- Purchase or "rent" a Rainbow vest and ID badge to wear during service. (The $20.00 fee can be waived if this presents a financial hardship.)
- Participate in weekly service at the site.
