Description:
Open Doors Academy is an afterschool enrichment program that focuses on the social, emotional, and academic development of middle school youth. Our mission is to nurture, protect, inspire and challenge adolescents to reach their full potential through the provision of meaningful out-of-school enrichment activities. Programming includes community time, educational sessions, field trips and community service activities, arts enrichment activities, and athletics.
What we do there:
Service participants at Open Doors Academy help with the Tutoring Program, designed for middle-school students who could benefit from additional help to improve their math and reading skills. The purpose of the program is to assist students with developing effective learning and study skills rather then simply completing their homework. Students will be matched one-on-one or in small groups with service participants. A free time follows the tutoring session, during which everyone can interact and play games or engage in outdoor sports and other recreational activities.

Students will be matched one-on-one or in small groups with service participants. A free time follows the tutoring session, during which everyone can interact and play games or engage in outdoor sports and other recreational activities.
NOTE: Transportation is NOT provided to this service opportunity. However, Wiley Middle School is within walking distance of JCU; most students are able to walk to this site in about 15-20 minutes (view a map here).
IMPORTANT: Participants MUST sign in and out on the Participant Service Hour Tracking form at Wiley EVERY time they participate in service. Failure to do so will result in not getting credit for service time or in removal from the activity.
All students who register for this service activity will be required to:
- Register for and attend a Pre-Service Workshop the week of January 28th.
- Complete a Statement of Nonconviction and three (3) Reference Forms, and upload them to your participant profile by Monday, February 4th.
- Complete a 1-step TB test at JCU's Health Services office by by Monday, February 4th.
- Complete a background check through JCU's Campus Safety office by Monday, February 4th.
- Participate in weekly service at the site.
