Description:
The Many Villages Tutoring Program is an outreach effort of Reaching Heights, whose organizational mission is to mobilize community resources to foster highly-valued public schools that provide all Cleveland Heights-University Heights (CHUH) students a successful education. The vision of our Many Villages school-based tutoring program is to provide targeted literacy interventions to every identified k-3rd grade student and provide tutoring support to every teacher in need. Many Villages is a School-based Academic Tutoring Program created by Reaching Heights in 2004. This program was developed to ferret out best practices around direct involvement of volunteers and teachers. We believe tutoring should be productive, motivating and satisfying for students, teachers and volunteers. Each Village operates their programs individually, but with a shared commitment to three program expectations: to assist the school in achieving academic progress for its students, to help teachers and not be a burden to them, and to be motivating and satisfying to tutors.
What we do there:
Many Villages school programs are supported with clear, intervention-based tutoring materials selected by guiding team members. Easy-to-use tutoring activities that focus primarily on K-3rd grade literacy interventions and standards-based skills are provided to all participants. Service participants are trained in these materials in working one-on-one or with small groups of students at Boulevard, Canterbury, Fairfax, Noble, Oxford, Roxboro, and Gearity Elementary schools.
