DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY AND CRIMINOLOGY

Sociology is the study of social human behavior; in particular the way people interact, organize, and take action. The discipline provides students with a strong analytical and theoretical background and skills to work with and understand people.

One of the major areas of study within the discipline of sociology is criminology. Criminology is the scientific study of crime and criminal behavior. Criminology examines the cause, extent, and types of crime in society, as well as crime prevention.

Many students participate in internships in nonprofit and governmental agencies throughout the Cleveland Metropolitan Area. Graduates have gone into many careers: to law and criminal justice, social work and counseling, public health and nonprofit administration, education and business, as well as sociology and anthropology.

SCC majors scheduled to graduate in May or August, 2012 should stop in the department office to complete paperwork for the required comprehensive exam.
The exam is scheduled on March 16, 2012.

Catherine Distelrath receives CHARLES J. PING award for Community Service through "Ohio Campus Connect" in recognition of her multiple worthwhile contributions to service projects in the community.

•	Dr. Richard Clark traveled with students to Ecuador at the conclusion of spring semester. He is the director of the new Peace, Justice, and Human Rights program.
•	Dr. Ernest DeZolt is the co-coordinator of the Criminology track, and is responsible for supervising internships that include Federal, State, and Local opportunities associated with the Criminal Justice System.
•	Dr. Duane Dukes has taken the lead in the drafting of a proposal to develop an inter-disciplinary minor in Forensics Behavioral Sciences for JCU.
•	Dr. Kenneth Eslinger is a contributor to International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences. He presented a paper at North Central Sociological Association in spring, 2010.
• •	Dr. Phyllis Braudy Harris was an invited speaker and Panel Moderator for the US Administration on Aging and National Alzheimer’s Association 2010 Alzheimer’s disease Supportive Services Program Partnership Program, Washington D.C. Susan Long worked with other faculty in Sociology and Biology to create the new Population and Public Health minor.
•	Dr. Donna Rumenik participates in summer seminars and international travel; contributes to journal.
•	Dr. Gloria Vaquera combines research with service via on-going work with Project ¿Q.U.É.?; presented a paper at the National Association of Chicano Studies Conference in Seattle, WA;continues evaluation work for New Mexico Tech University and Amarillo College. Dr. Vaquera was promoted to Associate Professor in fall 2010.
•	Dr. Wendy Wiedenhoft is promoted to Associate Professor; presents papers in NYC and in Northern Ireland; contributes to Social Movement Studies.
•	Lecturer Dan Winterich contributes to leading forensic publications. Additionally, Professor Winterich received an Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) Distinguished Law Enforcement Group Achievement Award.
•	Dr. Medora Barnes was selected to be as an Early Career Scholar by the Work and Family Researchers Network—an international and interdisciplinary organization based at the University of Pennsylvania and supported by a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Dr. Barnes also presented a paper at the American Sociological Association 2011 annual meetings, in Las Vegas, NV.
