Spring Book Series

Presenter – LINDA EISENMANN

Reviewing her latest book, Higher Education for Women in Postwar America 1945-1965

Higher Education for Women in Postwar America, 1945-1965 by Professor Linda Eisenmann explores the nature of postwar advocacy for women’s higher education.
The book not only underscores the impact of this advocacy but also identifies a link between women’s activism during World War II and the women’s movement of the late 1960s. It is a stunning eye-opener as it reclaims an era often denigrated for its lack of attention to women.

Linda Eisenmann is the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at John Carroll University and president of the Association for the Study of Higher Education. She holds a doctorate in the History of Education from Harvard University.

Spring Book Series

Presenter – KAREN LONG

Reviewing The Spiral Staircase by Karen Armstrong

The Spiral Staircase by Karen Armstrong is the engaging biography of one of the most prolific popular religious writers of our era. Armstrong writes with disarming
authenticity of her struggles as a nun and the agonizing decision to leave the convent; her disorienting return to the world she left behind; her frustrations as a graduate student, and her eventual and totally unanticipated success as a writer and commentator on religion.

Karen Long, the Book Editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, has a long list of personal favorite books. Because she reads dozens of books across many genres, her choice of The Spiral Staircase for our series would indicate that she considers it particularly noteworthy. (It is.)

Fall Book Series

Presenter – Fr. HOWARD GRAY, S.J.

Reviewing Child of My Heart by Alice McDermott

Child of My Heart by Alice McDermott is narrated by a woman who was born beautiful. She recalls the summer on the eastern end of Long Island when she was on the cusp of turning 15. One critic wrote: “McDermott’s gorgeous novel is laced with provocative insights into the enigma of the mutability of art, death’s haunting presence, our need for fantasies, and the endless struggle to keep our love pure.”

Fr. Howard Gray, S.J. returns by popular demand to review this book. Previously, Assistant to the President at John Carroll University for Mission and Identity, he is now Special Assistant to the President at Georgetown University, Washington, DC.

THE POLITICS OF BLOOD, MILK & THE KISS IN JUDAISM AND CHRISTIANITY

In a fascinating and original study, Susannah Heschel proposed that religious power is expressed through blood (e.g., martyrdom, circumcision), the kiss (sexuality and mysticism) and milk (the body). Her conviction is that the gendered politics of blood, milk and the kiss configure the self-understanding of Judaism and Jews (male and female), and, to a lesser extent, relations with Christianity. Susannah Heschel is the Eli Black professor of Jewish Studies at Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire. A prolific author, two of her most recent works are Abraham Geiger and the Jewish Jesus and the forthcoming book The Aryan Jesus: Christians, Nazis and the Bible.

EVENING PRAYER AND LECTURE WITH CARDINAL GODFRIED DANNEELS
ARCHBISHOP OF MECHELEN-BRUSSELS

The Cardinal Suenens Center cordially invites you to evening prayer and a lecture with Cardinal Godfried Danneels, Archbishop of Mechelen-Brussles, at Saint Peter Church on Friday, October 16, at 7pm.

Cardinal Godfried Danneels' interest in liturgy dates back to his graduate studies in Belgium and Rome that subsequently led to his appointment as professor of liturgy and sacramental theology at the Seminary of the Diocese of Bruges and at the Catholic University of Louvain. His contributions to the Dictionary of Liturgy expanded his reputation as a pre-eminent liturgical scholar and he continues to be in demand across the globe as a speaker on the intersection of theology and liturgy.
As a bishop, Cardinal Danneels maintains as a priority the spiritual nurture and the vital teamwork grounded in faith necessary between priests and lay persons. The cardinal also serves as member of several congregations of the Roman Curia and has been elected by fellow-bishops as a member of the permanent Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops. He is also co-moderator of the inter-faith Committee of the European Council of Religious Leaders, a coalition of senior religious leaders of Europe's historic religions who have committed themselves to peaceful coexistence and reconciliation.

Fall Book Series

Presenter – Dr. PAUL V. MURPHY

Reviewing his latest book, Ruling Peacefully

Ruling Peacefully: Cardinal Ercole Gonzaga and Patrician Reform in Sixteenth-Century Italy by Professor Paul Murphy is the first in-depth study of this Renaissance cardinal (1505-1563) who led a disordered personal life but who promoted serious religious and pastoral reform of the Church. Professor Murphy captures the paradox of this intriguing personality born into a family synonymous with wealth and power in Mantua.

Paul Murphy is Associate Professor of History and Director of the Institute of Catholic Studies at John Carroll University. In addition to Ruling Peacefully, he is the author of many academic articles about the Society of Jesus. He holds a doctorate in history from the University of Toronto.

Fall Book Series

Presenter – Fr. BRIAN O. MCDERMOTT

Reviewing Jesus of Nazareth by Pope Benedict XVI

Jesus of Nazareth by Pope Benedict XVI has commanded world-wide attention and has enjoyed months on The New York Times best-seller list. The author’s aim is to salvage the person of Jesus from recent “popular” depictions and to restore Jesus’ true identity as discovered in the Gospels. The pope writes as theologian and believer and offers a rich, compelling, flesh-and-blood portrait of the central figure of the Christian faith.

Fr. Brian O. McDermott, S.J. is the rector of the Jesuit Community at Loyola College Baltimore and teaches theology at the college. He is the author of What Are They Saying about the Grace of Christ? and Word Become Flesh: Dimensions of Christology. He holds a doctorate from the University of Nijmigem (Netherlands).

Visiting The Churches Of France: The Glory Of Burgundy and Alsace

France’s rich spiritual tradition glows in her churches and monasteries. Medieval architecture, ranging from small Romanesque churches to great Gothic cathedrals, as well as contemporary expressions in art, are windows to France’s formidable Christian heritage.

Our trip included visits to the monasteries at Fontenay, Vézelay, Taizé and Cluny where the Abbey church, begun in1088, was the largest church in Europe before St. Peter’s Basilica was built in Rome in the 16th century. We also visited Notre Dame, Sacre Coeur, and St. Sulpice in Paris as well as the impressive cathedrals at Chartres, Strasbourg, Reims, Metz, and Le Courbusier’s remarkable Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Haut in Ronchamp. Our
fourteen-day excursion was balanced with visits to other sites of
interest along the way.

Father Robert J. Marrone, D. Min., Pastor of St. Peter Church, Cleveland, and Adjunct Professor of Religious Studies at John Carroll University was our guide.

The Secret Mitzvah of Lucio Burke. Knopf published The Secret Mitzvah of Lucio Burke, an historical novel set in Depression-era Toronto, in 2005. The book begins when seventeen-year-old Lucio Burke knocks a mysterious bird out of the Toronto sky with a baseball and catapults himself into history – into contact with the gorgeous Ruthie, a radicalized labor movement, anti-Semitism, and Mussolini’s fascism. It’s a story about love, friendship, the nature of the miraculous and a quest to change the world.

His book is already acclaimed as a milestone in Thérèsian studies.

Presenter – MARY DORIA RUSSELL

Mary Doria Russell was born in suburban Chicago and holds a doctorate from the University of Michigan. Her novels have struck a deep chord with readers for their respectful but unblinking consideration of fundamental religious questions. Russell’s work has been recognized with many literary awards. The Sparrow and Children of God, two of her earlier books, have been translated into a dozen languages.

A Thread of Grace chronicles the Italian resistance to the Germans during the last two years of World War II and the three cultures (Italian Jews, Italian Catholics and the occupying Germans) that existed side-by-side. One reviewer wrote: “The action moves swiftly, with impressive authority, jostling dialogue, vibrant personalities and meticulous, unexpected
historical detail.”

Still An Insider At The Vatican & Now With All Things Catholic

Presenter – JOHN ALLEN, Rome Correspondent for The National Catholic Reporter & Vatican Analyst for National Public Radio, CNN, and ABC.

John Allen, Jr., the Rome correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter, has been a frequent guest of the Cardinal Suenens Center at John Carroll University. Along with his other readers, we are aware that he has relocated to New York City and that his “Word from Rome” column
has been re-christened as “All Things Catholic.” The move to New York allows John Allen to report more extensively on the Catholic Church in the United States as well as to travel and report on the Catholic community worldwide.
“Catholicism in the 21st century will be increasingly ‘upside down,’ driven by the experience of the global South, meaning Africa, Asia and Latin America,” Allen added. “I want to tell the story of how this transition will reconfigure virtually everything inside Catholicism, by spending time in those places, figuring out what makes the churches there tick, and
then teasing out how that will influence broader trends.”
John Allen is now based in Manhattan but remains the paper’s Rome correspondent and NCR maintains an office and residence in Rome. His evening with us was incisive, perceptive and newsworthy as always.

"Your faith and hope, then, are centered in God" - 1 Pet 1:21

This lecture explored new frontiers of the experience of God in our time and the theology that is seeking to explain them. These frontiers can be found in the suffering of people, particularly the poor; in the struggle of women for equal human dignity; in Christianity's encounter with world religions; and in the dialogue with science about the evolution of the universe. In each case, new insights expand traditional understandings of who God is and where God can be found. In their light, Christian hope takes on renewed strength.
