Born in Vietnam, Dr. Steve L. Robbins immigrated to the United States with his family as a small child and faced much anti-war and anti-Vietnamese sentiment. Dr. Robbins is recognized as an expert on issues of diversity and cultural competence. He brings an insightful perspective on the importance of inclusion and the power of caring.

Perspectives of an American Indian Surgeon: “Western and Traditional Medicine”
Dolan Center for Science and Technology, Donahue Auditorium
The first Navajo woman to be board certified as a surgeon, Dr. Lori Arviso Alvord seeks to bridge two worlds of medicine – traditional Navajo healing and conventional Western medicine. Although she was trained in medicine at Stanford University, Dr. Alvord returned to the healers of her tribe to “learn what a surgical residency could not teach me.” Dr. Alvord discusses her unique approach to medicine in her book The Scalpel and the Silver Bear. Join us for a demonstration of traditional Native American dance performed by JCU students before Dr. Alvord’s lecture.
