JCU College of Health Newsletter - March 2025: Shaping the Future of Health & Wellness Education

As we begin the Fall 2025 semester, I want to welcome you, whether you're returning or joining us for the first time, to the start of a meaningful and energizing year. Your curiosity, compassion, and commitment to health and wellness continue to inspire everything we do in the College of Health (CoH), and we can't wait to see what you bring to this next chapter.

Over the summer, our students, staff, and faculty remained active and engaged through impactful programming both locally and abroad. From exploring health systems in London and Vietnam to leading immersive experiences like our University Hospitals Health Scholar and Future Nurse programs, our community continued to learn, serve, and grow. Here in Cleveland, our Summer in the Heights initiative included a food and hygiene drive benefiting the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, and an interdisciplinary "Health for the Whole Person Fair" held on July 18. The fair featured activities like infection control education, grip strength checks, and mindfulness techniques that reflect our holistic approach to wellness.

Looking ahead, throughout our newsletters this academic year, I'm excited to continue sharing our strategic plan by highlighting the four CoH Pillars that guide our mission and shape our direction:

  1. Shaping Tomorrow's Health & Wellness Leaders
  2. Leading the Next Wave of Healthcare Innovation
  3. Harnessing Cleveland's Health Ecosystem
  4. Empowering a Compassionate Workforce

At the heart of our work is the CoH mission: to develop Ethical Leaders, Innovative Thinkers, and Compassionate Healers. These strategic pillars were created to support that mission and reflect the values we share as a community. They also align with John Carroll University's broader purpose: to inspire individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service, locally and throughout the world.

We start this academic year grounded in purpose, energized by our mission, and united in community. Welcome back.

Warmly,
Melissa Cole, DNP, APRN, ACNP-BC
Dean, College of Health

The UH Health Scholars Program is a four-week initiative that introduces high school students interested in health professions to a range of healthcare topics. As part of the program, 30 students—along with their faculty and mentors—visited John Carroll University, where the Pre-Health Professions program hosted them for an interactive session on the social determinants of health, a presentation from Admissions, lunch, and a campus tour. The students left with a deeper understanding of health and wellness—and a first look at life as a John Carroll student.
